Good godd*mn. That cat who was set on fire? Well, not so much.

At least she does seem to be refunding donations. I got notice yesterday that mine had been refunded via Paypal. As for my thoughts about the sort of person who'd conduct a "sociological experiment" of this particular type and then let your friends stick their necks out for you, well, they're not exactly fit for print. Glad to see that you proved to your dad that there are some really good people. Unfortunately, you've also proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that some of them really do suck.

Geez, I could have just told her about the good, donating internet people. When Tetsuo was hit by a car, my friendslist pitched in for his surgery and recovery so generously that I had to start asking people to donate in his name to the feral rescue group that was helping me with him. And they DID! And my friendslist just paid for roughly half of Jim's iPod, because I asked them to and because Jim is nothing if not a deserving cause.

That's just really crappy, to mess with people like that. No matter what she thought she was trying to prove.

Man... that makes me never, ever want to donate to someone on the internet for animals.

Ever.

Please don't judge us all! My friendslist literally saved Tetsuo's life.

I should amend that... it makes me never want to donate to someone whom I don't know well, on the internet. :)

The thing is, [livejournal.com profile] manhattan knows the woman well, they're former housemates, and it looks like they're also former friends. Manhattan vouched for her. I really trust Manhattan absolutely. I only know her online, but I've known her a long time, she's always been the same sort of person. So I figured it was okay.

Manhattan is, understandably, completely shredded now.

I'm pretty sure that the whole sociological experiment excuse was just the best thing she could think up so that people didn't march on her house with pitchforks and burning tar and set HER on fire.

*nod* *sigh* I'm actually worried about [livejournal.com profile] city_glitter... she's had depression and suicidal tendencies in the past; the rivers of anger and venom she's getting right now... on the one hand, I can't say she doesn't deserve it; on the other hand, I don't want to see her destroyed because of this. But she's got a hard road ahead of her, no matter what happens. *sigh*

As someone who struggles with depression, I can sympathize, but boy oh boy.

I will say this: it took balls to admit to it and accept all the anger that rushed out from it, instead of running away and hiding. Maybe she can be given that much.

When I was her age, I was actively supporting people who were doing things similar, or worse. I wasn't perpetuating them; my honesty (and fear of consequences) wouldn't let me go that far - but I believed the people who were doing them, even when they told me they were lying, and asked for my help in continuing the lie.

There is always the possibility of redemption. It'll be damn hard, a hell of a struggle, a lot of work and hardship; but if she does that work, she deserves whatever redemption she can earn for herself. I don't believe she's irreparably broken... but I also believe she's got a very, very hard time ahead of her, entirely of her own making.

I'm pretty sure she's actually guilty of fraud regardless of if she gives the money back or not. I hope someone is pissed off enough to ream her. (I gave no money, what with the job loss. I did offer artwork, though.)

Wow. Talk about how much grief one can pile up - I had no idea what was going on with the cat / fire thread thingy, but I can't imagine this woman has a single friend left on the planet.

I read a lot of the comments, and I can't find anyone supporting her 'experiment' or anything. Wow.

The net is a strange place.
