geekchick: (road trip)
Back from JoCo Cruise Crazy, had a fantastic time and absolutely no internet of any sort for the last week, and now I have to get used to a marked lack of folded towel animals on my bed in the evening and delivery of milk and cookies in the middle of the night. Also, not sure how I'm going to make it through this upcoming week now that I can no longer take a nap at 2 PM every day. Longer write up may follow later, but the executive summary reads something like "Oh man, did I ever need that."

So Holland America said "there won't be a formal night on this cruise" and since I wanted an excuse to wear a fancy-schmancy dress, I was all: :(
Then today I got the schedule email and now I'm all: :D
- THE PAUL F. TOMPKINS MOUSTACHE FORMAL
A gathering for fancy people in fancy clothes (optional), wearing fancy moustaches (required), convened in defiance of Holland America's announcement that there will be no traditional "formal night." Moustaches will be provided. Hosted by actor/comedian/moustache wearer/sharp-dressed man Paul F. Tompkins.

[livejournal.com profile] winterfield, I may need your costuming advice. ;)

Tangentially, thank you all for the kind comments on the new haircut. So far I am loving it. Can't wait to see just how short it ends up once I don't blow it out and flat iron it and just let the natural curl take over.

Weekend summary: ocean-block hotel, salt water, sand every-freakin-where, a wee bit of sunburn, fudge, fish and chips (and curry), Saturday afternoon rain (boo!), "we walked almost the entire length of the OC boardwalk down and back and my feet are killing me", refusing to join [livejournal.com profile] nminusone on the ride that made me queasy just watching safely from the ground, lots of pinball, outlet shopping and now we're home and sadly I have to go back to work for the first time in a week tomorrow after picking up the cat from the vet where he's been incarcerated boarded. More later, after I catch up with all you people.

My goal last year was to use all my PTO and not carry any over, but that failed miserably. I have something close to four weeks of vacation and personal time this year that I'd like to use up, even after using the week that I carried over. I'm not sure that this year's going to go much better thanks to combinations of (lack of) money and deadlines, but I'm planning to give it a shot. To try and stave off my imminent mental breakdown thanks to a particularly stressful situation going on, I've been daydreaming about how I'd like to burn those vacation days assuming time and finances allowed. In no particular order:

  • If I thought I'd actually get stuff done, I'd take a week off to clean out/up my house.

  • Volunteering for a week at Best Friends animal sanctuary in Utah. Since I can't have a dog of my own, this would be a fabulous way to get my doggie fix (and kitties, and bunnies, and horses, and goats, and pigs, and birds) while also lending a hand to one of my favorite organizations.

  • A vipassana retreat at the Insight Meditation Society. Can I survive a week of noble silence?

  • A road trip, using Roadside America as a guidebook. Cheesy roadside attractions, woohoo!

  • Festival season! Bumbershoot, Edmonton, Calgary (Chumbawamba acoustic, Great Big Sea, Neko Case, Leo Kottke, Ollabelle, Sarah Slean, Rufus Wainwright, Hawksley Workman), Cambridge (Oysterband, Bruce Cockburn), Blacksun Festival/ProjektFest, Folks Festival (Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Peter Himmelman, The Ditty Bops, Catie Curtis, Guggenheim Grotto), Falcon Ridge (Dar Williams, Eddie from Ohio, John Gorka, Lowen & Navarro, Marshall Crenshaw), 50 Years of Stax benefit, FloydFest (DeVotchKa, North Mississippi All-Stars, Donna the Buffalo, The Duhks, Scythian), Tønder Festival (Levellers, Great Big Sea, Solas, Karan Casey Band), Nordic Roots Festival

  • A week in London. Ditto Paris/Rome/Florence/Kyoto/Tokyo/St. Petersburg. And Cuba, if it wouldn't net me a big fine and a lot more hassle than I want to deal with.

  • My long-delayed (we're talking like three years) trip to LA to meet folks.

  • Portland, OR. If I can make myself leave Powell's, I'd offer to buy [livejournal.com profile] pdx42 a drink.

  • A cruise (Alaska or Mediterranean). If I'm dreaming, I might as well go for a transatlantic crossing on the QE2.

So, DCist tells me that the HFStival lineup has been announced, and I get an overwhelming sense of "So what?" Counting Crows headlining? Are they still around? (Apparently so if they're appearing, but who knew?) On top of the generally underwhelming lineup, tickets are $45 for the lawn and $100 for the pit -- per day. Sheesh. No thanks. Others I mention below are more expensive, but there are actually a bunch of acts I want to see.

Then there's Bonnaroo, which unlike HFStival actually looks like something I'd shell out $185 for three days for (assuming I still can). Radiohead, Tom Petty, Beck, Elvis Costello, Oysterhead, Bonnie Raitt, Death Cab for Cutie, moe., Bright Eyes, Bela Fleck, Cypress Hill, Buddy Guy, Ben Folds, Sonic Youth, Matisyahu, My Morning Jacket, Nickel Creek, Gomez, Steve Earle, Blues Traveler, The Dresden Dolls, Son Volt, Rusted Root, Devendra Banhart, Mike Doughty, Sasha, Seu Jorge, Shooter Jennings, Devotchka (*squee!!*), Marah...and those are just the acts that I know I'd like to see. (Granted, it's most of them.)

Let's not forget Coachella, which seems to always have a fabulous lineup. This year is no exception, but for some reason I'm not dying to go even with Sigur Rós, Massive Attack, and Imogen Heap.

So far Pitchfork has got the Mountain Goats, Yo La Tengo, Devendra Banhart, and Mission of Burma. I guess I'll keep an eye on this one, especially since the prices are much more reasonable than any of the others. Haven't been to Chicago in a while. And about a week later, there's...

Lollapalooza? Okay, this could be fun: Kanye West, Wilco, Death Cab, The Flaming Lips (*squee!!*), The Shins, Matisyahu, Ryan Adams, Sonic Youth, Thievery Corporation, Nickel Creek, Blues Traveler, The New Pornographers, Iron & Wine, Poi Dog Pondering (speaking of "they're still alive?"), Panic! At the Disco, Stars, Calexico, Nada Surf, Feist, The Go! Team, Mates of State. $130 for three days, not terrible. Less than Bonnaroo, and no camping. On the other hand, no camping == hotel cost on top of tickets.

Then there's the whole folk festival circuit. Edmonton has actually announced a few names already (!!), including Feist, Baka Beyond, and Bruce Cockburn (*squee!!*). Unless they somehow manage to snag the Oysterband again though, I think my expensive festival choice for the summer right now would have to be Bonnaroo or Lollapalooza.

Today is Pungenday, day 44 in the season of Bureaucracy, 3271.

Random thoughts about the beach trip:

I suspect I enjoyed Rehoboth more than I might've Ocean City anyway, especially since there were far fewer bikers on incredibly loud Harleys cruising the streets. Plus, they have a Lambda Rising outpost.

$160 a night for an Econo Lodge not remotely near the water is a bit much, but not as much as the $279 someone else was paying, which we discovered when checking out as he was pitching a fit at the desk that even though he'd signed the paper with the rate when he got in the night before, it wasn't what his wife was quoted on the phone. (Dude, you sign that paper agreeing to the rate and you're pretty much screwed. And you can't claim that it's the wrong name on the reservation when it's apparently the same as the one on your credit card.)

Outlet mauls were conquered, and the mighty hunters have returned with a car trunk full of swag.

Still making me giggle: the little girl, maybe 5 years old, who said loudly, "Mama, I can't stop dancing!!" in the middle of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax" as they were playing it in the restaurant. And it was true, she danced around in her chair to the whole thing.

Bacon ice cream. And pumpkin mushroom, and pizza, and hot sauce. And Cialis. (I did not try any of the preceding flavors, the thought was too horrifying. Except for hot sauce, which might've been okay.)

Grotto Pizza definitely owns all of Rehoboth Beach, although they haven't worked up so far as I can tell to owning entire states like Pepsi does. Also, I think there's some rule in the books that you have to be very tall and very attractive to work at (or maybe own) Go Fish!

Lots of dolphins just offshore on Sunday, all of whom seem to have a keenly developed sense of when cameras are put away so that they can resume jumping around.

Not half-bad surf on Friday evening. (Thanks, Ophelia.) Surprisingly little rain, except for very late Saturday night. Next time, budget more time to sit on the beach in the sun, maybe send C. off for go-karts while I nap on the beach.

Neither of us knows off the tops of our heads which countries don't have extradition treaties with the US.

Even taking into account getting on the road after eating a plate of fish and chips and fighting off the resulting food coma, my 2.5 hour drive home Sunday was far less hassle than C.'s 5 hour drive up on Friday. (Yes, we left late in the day and hit rush hour in both DC and Annapolis.) On both occasions, we got to remark on how musically "Alice in Wonderland" by Randell & Schippers is really not so good, but the "WTF???!!???" amusement factor is high enough that the channel doesn't get changed.

Today is Pungenday, day 39 in the season of Bureaucracy, 3271.

Apparently Ocean City is all full up this weekend. The only two hotels I could find any space at were a Comfort Suites a mile or so from the beach at $279 a night (and that's the AAA rate) or the Fenwick Inn. I was curious as to why this was the only place close to the ocean that had rooms available, but this cleared it pretty much right up. Call me a snob, but for $170+tax a night, I expect a clean room. So instead, we're going to Rehoboth; of course that's all full up too, so we're staying out near the outlets rather than near the beach. So much for the grand plan of going after Labor Day to avoid the insane crowds and the higher prices. Oh well, either way it's still a trip to the beach. I wonder where my bathing suit is?

[Edit: Well, I found out why Ocean City is full: Delmarva Bike Week. D'oh!]

Today is Setting Orange, day 16 in the season of Bureaucracy, 3271.

In random bits and pieces for now, I'll probably try to be more organized about it after I get home.

I've been waking up between 6:30 and 7 AM the last couple of days. That's just weird. I've also been passed out well before midnight, which might explain the getting up at the crack of dawn.

Boulder is wonderful. If it weren't for about seventeen reasons it would be a bad idea, I'd be checking out the job market. *cough*Sun*cough* But I'm not, I promise. I'm staying put for now.

I thought Virginia was bad with the "it's 3:45, time for a thunderstorm" thing. Yeesh. Given the sheer number of lightning strikes I've seen in the last three days, it's hard to believe you could live here for any significant amount of time and not get hit. (Okay, I exaggerate a bit, but I've still seen a huge amount of lightning. Missed the hail in Colorado Springs on Saturday though.)

It took longer than I expected to get to Taos. I did putter around a bit though, doing some more hiking and picture-taking around NCAR and then stopping at the Garden of the Gods and doing some more hiking and picture-taking until the regularly-scheduled afternoon storms came rolling in over the mountains. There were also the three or so times I nearly had to pull over to the side of the highway because it was raining so hard I could barely see the road in front of me; that'll screw with your travel schedule, yes indeed. I also didn't stop to think where 64 took me, which meant I didn't take into account that there'd be a large chunk of the trip on canyon roads with 25 mph speed limits. Stunningly beautiful trip, but I think I might need to look for a faster route back to Denver for Wednesday.

It would've been useful to bring either a card reader, the USB cable, or the 512 MB compact flash card. Oops. And the free wireless in the room is just like wireless, except with ethernet. :-P Luckily they have cables at the front desk, because all I have with me is my wireless card.

Okay, finished with work and finished with boring you nice people for now. It's 11 PM, and I'm apparently ready for bed. That's not riiiiiiight.
