Aug. 29th, 2009 12:38 pmI decided I could manage to spend a whopping $10 to see The National, Girl Talk, and Pete Tong (plus St. Vincent and Mates of State if I feel like spending 14 hours or so at Merriweather). Anyone else going to the Virgin festival tomorrow? They released a bunch of tickets today at 10; I expect anyone who paid $100 for a ticket on craigslist probably feels kinda stupid. I'd feel kinda stupid too if I'd paid $100 for a ticket that started out as free.
I'll be in Boston (well, Cambridge) the weekend of Sept. 11-13 for the jQuery conference. Not sure where I'm staying yet, although I really want to try and swing the Hotel Marlowe because a) it's about half a mile from the venue and b) leopard-print carpets and red velvet upholstery, baby; it's much more budget-friendly to stay further out and drive in though. (I'm doing this on my own dime.) We'll see. I'd probably have that Friday night free, plus Saturday night after 7 or 8. My plan is to drive up Friday and then drive back Sunday night after the end of the conference. Once I get plans more settled, I'll see about calling a dinner foo or something.
On a less-fun note, today's plans involve the farmer's market (already done) and house cleaning (I'm procrastinating by reading LJ and Twitter). Woohoo.

She's Geeky NoVA
Mar. 24th, 2009 10:34 amFrom my inbox today (copypasta, apply [sic] as necessary):
She's Geeky is coming to Northern Virginia - the DC Area.
April 18th McLean Virginia (Tyson's Corner).
http://www.shesgeeky.org/
Early bird admission is $40 until April 1 - $45 regular until April 11 and $50 after that.
Student admission is $20
We are inviting women from a divers range of industries together for a day of interactive learning and industry cross pollination.
To us Geekiness is self defined - from those with advanced degrees in mathematics, science and engineering. To skilled programmers who are in large enterprises, government or startups. To women who have taught themselves how to code the PHP on their side bars on their blog or just super enthusiastic users of technology.
Each city has a different mix of technologies - DC has a variety of fields
* the nonprofit and advocacy sectors,
* government, defense, aerospace, and intelligence
* Web portals - like AOL
* startups innovating
The range of topics discussed is diverse - in California you can see the list of sessions.

-------------
*How does the unconference day work?*
The sessions are put forward by the women who attend the event - and are diverse. They include expert topics about their particular expertise, hosting conversations about issues of interest both technical and personal (like how to balance work and family), exploring start-up ideas, introductions or deep dives to different programming languages or frameworks, sharing stories about what it was like to work in the early days of the industry, introduction to public speaking and many others.
Beginning at 9 AM each day, we start with a blank wall and, in less than an hour, through a highly participative process, create a full day, multi-track conference agenda that is relevant and inspiring to everyone there.
From there, we go to separate areas or rooms assigned to each topic. The session can be a presentation, inquiry about a question or discussion about an issue or technical field. or. One participant volunteers to record the proceedings.
The notes from each session are collected in the newsroom, then a book is compiled with all the notes from the conference and distributed to everyone who attended.
-----------------
Sponsorship opportunities for both small and large companies are available too.
If you have questions you can e-mail us at info@shesgeeky.org
Things I'm thinking about trekking around the area for:
Anyone I know going to be attending either of those things?
- Ignite Baltimore October 16th. Selfishly I wish it was Ignite Arlington. [Edit: No, it's not a pyrotechnics conference. Sorry!]
- OpenSQL Camp November 14th-16th. Charlottesville is almost, but not quite, commuting distance for me.
Anyone I know going to be attending either of those things?

Mar. 20th, 2007 06:41 pmIt's that time again: time to try and convice the Powers That Be to blow the budget on a conference. Where should I start? Yes, I realize that to have a particularly useful answer you'd need to have more information; answering polls is so much more fun when you're pulling an answer out of thin air though. ;)
[Poll #950632]
My own preferences in order are: OSCON (although I'm severely hampered by the fact they don't put up any session information or registration info until well after I'd have to have registered for the other two I'm really interested in), MySQL, php|tek (I went to this last year and was pleased with the technical content). My coworker will probably go to LISA.

I just registered for php|tek in Orlando the week of April 24; unfortunately talking to a coworker about his Joe Satriani tickets reminded me that the Great Big Sea show I have good tickets for is around that time, which I had totally forgotten about. Luckily for me, it turns out to be that Friday night the 28th and the conference ends around mid-day on Friday. Now I just have to remember that when I try to book my flights and avoid tickets that will get me back in town after 7 PM.
Speaking of GBS,
winterbadger, I assume this means I get to meet the fabulous A.? ;) I have the tickets in hand, by the way; they changed their mind about wil-call apparently.

Mar. 22nd, 2006 03:38 pmIt would be much, much easier to write a compelling justification for why I should get to attend OSCON if they'd hurry up and post a schedule. "You should send me because, uh, it'd be really kewl. There's lots of stuff there." Not going to cut it with the folks with the budget, sadly. Hopefully this year there won't be a repeat of last year's confusion and I'll actually get to go.
php|tek is somewhat easier to justify, what with schedules and prices and things, although as of Monday there were only 30 or so spaces still available.
Anyone have any reviews of SANSFIRE they'd be willing to share?
