I'm done with today. Rocks fall; everyone dies.

In (mostly) less cranky news, I got CDs mailed out last night to everyone whose discs I've already received. Local folks should probably see them turn up tomorrow, everyone else should get them by the end of the week. There are a couple of playlists that I have that weren't included with the discs, and I don't actually remember who got which discs (it really was chosen randomly), so I'll email out the playlists to everyone later this week. Also, I put together the packages when I was exhausted and I don't think I sent anyone a copy of their own disc; if I did, ping me and I'll make you a copy of another one. Here's the slightly-more-cranky part: since there are two participants who I assume have backed out based on the fact that I've not heard anything from them since the sign-up, I don't have quite enough discs for everyone. I'll make extra copies of some other discs from my set of four in order to make up the shortfall for the remaining participant(s); if any of you object to my making an extra copy of your disc, let me know.

Okay, it looks like the final count is 15 participants. In order to keep the number of CDs each person has to make manageable, I'm going to go with the "three groups of five people" idea. Here's the plan:

  • Each person makes four CDs, and I will randomly choose a set of four discs to send back to each of you.
  • I should have discs in hand by February 26, which is three weeks from today. I can be a bit flexible on that since I know lots of folks are really busy right now and a couple of sets of discs are coming from overseas, but please let me know in advance if that date's going to pose a problem for you and we'll work it out.
  • If you're local and want to do one or both disc handoffs in person, that can be arranged. As much as I'd like to do in-person handoffs in the UK, if you choose that route you'll probably be waiting for your discs until the dollar isn't in the toilet (by which I mean "quite a long time"). ;)

I sent this via email (to addresses listed in LJ profiles) to everyone who signed up with some additional details like my mailing address; if you don't see it soon, ping me.

CD swap

Okay, there's apparently at least a little interest in the idea, so let's do this thing. Here's the deal:

  • Unlike my previous swaps, this one is going to have a theme: if your life was being filmed (à la Zach Braff or Cameron Crowe, ferinstance), what would the soundtrack look like? This doesn't necessarily mean you have to put together a disc full of The Shins, unless of course "New Slang" really did change your life. (I kid, I like The Shins, I'd be perfectly happy to hear it on swap discs.)

  • Fill out ye olde LJ polle below to let me know if you want in; answers accepted through next Friday night.

  • The default will be for everyone to make one disc for every other person in the swap, mail the discs to me, and I'll send them back out. Not that I think any of my friends are likely to be swaplifters or anything like that, but it makes it easy to figure out who's gotten discs. If we've got ten people or so involved, I'll divide the participants up into two groups so that people don't have to burn huge numbers of CDs.

Hey localfolks? I washed the road salt off my car last night, so that stuff falling from the sky today? My fault. Sorry.

In a weird coincidence, I was just thinking last night on my way to the mailbox that I should run a CD swap with a "soundtrack of your life" theme. I check in at [livejournal.com profile] audiography today, and they beat me to the theme. May still do it, of course; anyone potentially interested? (This is not a call for participation quite yet, I'm just wondering if anyone would be interested.)

CD swap(s)

First, for the swap that I'm running: swappers, could you ping me at my @livejournal address with a quickie update on the status of your CDs please if you haven't already? Haven't seen anything yet and I was hoping to get stuff mailed out by Tuesday or so.

Second, I got the first of my CDs from the Great Audiography Mix Trade, this one from [livejournal.com profile] fabulous_papaya, and have just gotten a chance to listen to it. It rocks like a rockin' thing. I'd heard very few of the artists and/or tracks on it, and it included some folks that I'd really been wanting to check out like Laika and Panic! At the Disco. The only drawback is that now I've really got the [livejournal.com profile] audiography equivalent of EWS going on.

This one was kind of hard because I was mixing for people whose tastes I don't really know at all, but I think it turned out reasonably well. I avoided the alt.country/singer-songwriter stuff I've mostly been listening to lately because it seemed more likely to go over poorly based on what I could see listed in their interests.

Track listing for my Great Audiography Mix Trade II contributions:

1) Kasabian - Club Foot
2) Tomoyasu Hotei - Battle Without Honor or Humanity
3) Origa - Inner Universe
4) Beverly Klass - Temple
5) Stars - Ageless Beauty
6) Sarah Bettens - Scream
7) I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness - When You Go Out
8) ccc - Close to No One
9) Muse - Sunburn
10) The Magnetic Fields - I Wish I Had an Evil Twin
11) Jorane - Stay
12) DeVotchKa - Death by Blonde
13) Jill Tracy - Evil Night Together
14) Sufjan Stevens - They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!! They Have Come Back From the Dead!! Ahhhhh!
15) Snow Patrol - Velocity Girl
16) Conjure One - Center of the Sun (featuring Poe)
17) Death Cab for Cutie - Title and Registration
18) Vienna Teng - My Medea

Some of these may show up on later swap CDs, be warned -- especially since I absolutely love the Sufjan Stevens title. =) (I won't copy the playlist wholesale though, I promise.) If you want a copy of the disc, let me know and give me some time to finish up the two other ongoing swaps and I can send you one.

Today is Boomtime, day 40 in the season of The Aftermath, 3271.

I'm about to get started on my contribution for the Great Audiography Mix Trade II, so I thought I'd issue one last call for the separate CD swap I'd suggested. I'll probably try to get started on putting that one together this weekend, so if you want to join up, let me know by Wednesday night/Thursday morning. Otherwise, I suspect the three of us involved so far will happily horde all the good music ourselves. ;)

I'd just been thinking that it was maybe time for another CD swap, when I noticed that [livejournal.com profile] audiography announced the Great Audiography Mix Trade II. Whee!

Still, I think another CD swap might be fun in addition to this, since I know lots of my reading list aren't [livejournal.com profile] audiography members. Anyone game?

(Wow, I thought the KMFDM Madonna cover was odd. It's got nothing on this one. *blink*)
geekchick: (doof doof)
I am inordinately happy with the mix I made for my recent CD swap, and I've actually been listening to it quite a bit. Not surprising, I suppose, since the only theme was "some of your favorite music". There was so much I wanted to put on the disc that just didn't fit, and trimming it down took longer than creating the disc in the first place. It's not entirely representative of my musical tastes mostly because I listen to a ton of different stuff that just doesn't work well together on a CD. Here's what I ended up with on the final pass:

cut in case those who haven't received their discs yet want to be surprised )

If any of the other participants want to post their tracklist here, feel free.

Now, on to [livejournal.com profile] rivka's holiday music swap. This one is much harder.
