This is exactly the problem with my phone, except mine oh-so-considerately waited until it was fifteen months old and thus out of warranty to start freezing up. The Cingular store in Tyson's was a whole lot of no help when I asked if there was anything that could be done to fix it, which doesn't surprise me since the first words out of the guy's mouth when I handed him my phone were "I've never seen one of these phones before". :-P Long story short(-ish): not eligible for a new phone at a discount from Cingular until the end of October (and they don't offer this model anymore, it's long-since discontinued), current phone can't be repaired under warranty, so I see eBay in my future and I don't know yet when my cell number will be in service again.

[Edit: Will try a different store tonight to see if it might be a problem with the sim card that swapping might help. If I'm lucky, that'll do it, but from what I've found it doesn't seem promising.]

[Son of edit: Even without a sim card in the phone at all, I get the same problem. It's apparently something screwed up in the phone itself. Snagged a Motorola V635 quad-band phone on eBay.]

No, it took Sprint three months to remove an $1100 charge on my phone bill that was their mistake. Not better. I have no complaints about Cingular's service, it's a problem with the phone itself. They stopped carrying it after a couple of months, apparently.

How long have you had a cingular/at&t phone? I heard about someone else having this similar issue and it turned out to be an old sim card and the solution was simply to replace the sim card. With t-mobile that was able to be done for free at any t-mobile store.

But that was the behavior, locking up on start up, with a different t-mobile phone. Couldn't hurt to try at least.

A quick test might be popping the sim card of another cingular user into your phone and seeing how it behaves.

Worth a shot, maybe I'll try a different Cingular store this evening and seeing if they can do something like that for testing purposes. (It's not like I can go 50 feet around herewithout tripping over one. ;))

I bought this phone when it first came out in May of last year, and I switched over from Sprint at the time. Looking at the forums, several people have had the same problem and it's involved replacing the phone. If it's just a matter of replacing the sim, that would be great, but I'm scoping out a couple of different phone models in case it's really toast.

I wonder if you complain to customer service (rather than the sales drones at the stores) and send them documentation showing it's a known bug they'll replace it out of warranty?
