Things that one cannot find for love nor money here at the moment: bottled water and any batteries in sizes other than AA or AAA. I do have to wonder about people stockpiling gallons of milk though. Sna? I'm failing to see the appeal of having two and a half gallons of rancid milk sitting around if we do end up losing power.

I confess that I wasn't taking the whole hurricane thing particularly seriously until I looked at the tracking maps that show the center of the storm passing, er, relatively close to here Thursday night. (Update: they've shifted it back off to the west as of this morning.) Should be an exciting evening. =) The only thing I'm worried about really is the power; our power will go off if you just look at it wrong, so I'm expecting that it'll disappear at some point. I think tomorrow I'll try to figure out how to waterproof my leaky office, see if anyone in the state has C cells, and try to figure out what we have food-wise that doesn't require refrigeration and isn't too scary to contemplate consuming.

Federal government offices will be closed tomorrow, and Metro is going to suspend new rail and bus service as of 11 AM. (Meaning they'll stop accepting new passengers as of 11, any vehicles in transit will finish out their routes and then go out of service.)

On to the not-at-all-a-PSA bit:
I'm going to the office tomorrow to make sure all the machines in the outer offices are shut down and off the floor, but may try to take off early in the afternoon. I stopped at the bookstore on the way home to pick up Endless Nights (just call me fangirl), and left with that book, "Kushiel's Dart", the current Scientific American with the brain on the cover (braaaaaains...), and a couple of Tenchi manga for C. Wh yes, I do very much resemble the current storyline on [livejournal.com profile] dorktowerfeed. We have a flat of Diet Coke, non-perishable foodstuff, a freezer full of ice for the cooler if needed, lots of candles and a couple of oil lamps, and a love of Big Weather. I think we're all set. (I will, however, be quite upset if my car gets damaged because my neighbors don't bother to bring their crap in off of their balconies.)

Hey, Boston folks!

A friend of a friend desperately needs to find a foster home for her guinea pig, Niles. She's in a grad student dorm and can't have any animals, so she needs to find a place for him immediately (like, tonight or tomorrow morning). She'd like to be able to visit him and to get him back eventually. Can any of you help, even temporarily?
