Federal government offices will be closed tomorrow, and Metro is going to suspend new rail and bus service as of 11 AM. (Meaning they'll stop accepting new passengers as of 11, any vehicles in transit will finish out their routes and then go out of service.)

On to the not-at-all-a-PSA bit:
I'm going to the office tomorrow to make sure all the machines in the outer offices are shut down and off the floor, but may try to take off early in the afternoon. I stopped at the bookstore on the way home to pick up Endless Nights (just call me fangirl), and left with that book, "Kushiel's Dart", the current Scientific American with the brain on the cover (braaaaaains...), and a couple of Tenchi manga for C. Wh yes, I do very much resemble the current storyline on [livejournal.com profile] dorktowerfeed. We have a flat of Diet Coke, non-perishable foodstuff, a freezer full of ice for the cooler if needed, lots of candles and a couple of oil lamps, and a love of Big Weather. I think we're all set. (I will, however, be quite upset if my car gets damaged because my neighbors don't bother to bring their crap in off of their balconies.)

"Kushiel's Dart"

Let me know what you think if you get to it before I get to my copy. :-)

the current Scientific American with the brain on the cover (braaaaaains...)

Now I have an earworm of the Voltaire song (one I first heard in a "Grim & Evil" cartoon before I even knew who he was). :-)

You'll still probably beat me to it. :-) I'm still chugging (although enjoyably) through The Mists of Avalon and have several other things on the "pile" before it.

Do I suck because the first thing I thought was not "Whee, snow day!" but "Dammit, no fencing"?

Nope. Cause I wanted karate to happen that day, but it won't.

Course my office is still officially open...

OK, you're a fangirl. :)

Is being a fangirl better than being a propeller-girl? What about a prop-fan-girl with seven blades?

Have fun in the Big Weather, love... I'm kind of envious, even though I'll be happily off to Oregon. I remember watching the storm surge flow up through the parking lot of my lakefront apartment complex in Houston, during a mere Cat I hurricane in 1989 (I went outside while the eye passed over ;).

KUSHIEL'S DART

I loved it, and have recommended it very highly to everyone I talk about sf/fantasy books with in Boston. I also enjoyed KUSHIEL'S CHOSEN, and the reviews of KUSHIEL'S AVATAR (which I have not gotten yet) have said that it does NOT suffer from third-book-in-the-seriesitis.

That said, the books ARE about someone who saves the world, negotiates the peace and (metaphorically speaking) invents the wheel and fire while we're at it. Also, a major premise is just silly (that the protagonist is the only real submissive masochist in the world, and that in general submissive masochists are terribly rare.)

I can live with the flaws because the world-building in exquisite. It's a complete and believable world, and, more, it's one where I would even like to live! The religion preaches pleasure and sexuality as sacraments, for starters. I'd say jump it up to next in your queue--or just dive right in while you're hiding from the hurricane.
