Jan. 17th, 2002 10:19 pmI think I made myself look good at the office by figuring out how to solve that Outlook mail import problem we've been puttering with for two days. Always good to end your first week on the job by pulling a rabbit out of your hat, no? (Why bother having an import wizard if the only way to get the stupid thing to work is to manually recreate folders and then copy the original files to a directory by hand anyway?) I think next week more of the actual work is going to kick in, which should be good. Started in with notes for the documentation which I'm going to be tasked to write, which is of course way up on my list of favorite things to do. Better than constant conference calls at least. How does someone who hates talking on the phone end up in a job where there are regularly scheduled conference calls to sit in on?
I am still struggling with having to get to bed by 12:30 and up by 8 or so, as my body still wants to stay up until 3 or so. It's getting somewhat easier though, so maybe in another week or two it won't be so bad. I haven't had to go in to an office on a regular basis in just about two years, so it almost feels like that first "real job" after school when you can't sleep until 1:30 on Friday afternoons anymore because you can't not schedule any work on Fridays like you could sometimes manage with classes. I'm also having a minor spell of irc/AIM withdrawal as I can't run AIM at work and am not quite comfortable enough yet having an irc terminal window open.
J. and I talked about my learning perl, and he said that perhaps we could sit down for an hour or so every week and he could tutor me (assuming that everyone's not swamped, of course) as he used to teach perl. I took a few classes years ago, but I forgot most of it because I never really used it. There's a $1500 training reimbursement that will kick in once my benefits do, which would just cover the two classes at Westlake. Wish I could find a class less geared towards writing the back end to a mail form and more oriented towards doing administrative work, but haven't seen anything like that yet. Guess I'll get the basics either way and then pick a direction to head off in on my own. I think I've already budgeted a huge portion of my paychecks to books I want to pick up, I need to be careful about that and pay bills first.
Okay, time for dinner and then bed soon.
