This was my deck two hours ago. It's still snowing, and there's a blizzard warning until 6 and then a winter storm warning until 6 AM tomorrow. Do I start shoveling now to make a little dent in the problem, or wait until tomorrow?
It's not, really. Luckily. We're technically under a blizzard warning, but I think it's actually more of an issue out to the southeast of the city. One more cup of coffee, I think, then I can use this as an excuse to put on my absolutely ridiculous grey pinstripe trapper hat and go outside. =D
I suggest making a dent now because it will be really overwhelming later. I suppose it depends on whether or not your personal preference is to get it all done at once or to do less twice or three times (or four...). But after going through this countless times, I find it's better to do some interim shoveling before it's all done, and then at least I get some recovery time in between. Sometimes if you wait too long you just can't finish it.
Shoveling will suck either way, of course.
I just read the above comment and if it's blowing around, yes, wait. Otherwise you're wasting the shoveling.
Yeah, this is going to suck either way (and oh god do I not want to start digging out my car). I'd rather get started now though rather than wait until I have another six inches to get rid of, possibly with bonus melt and refreezing. Luckily it's not really blowing around much; they say we're under blizzard warning, but I think it's mostly off to the east of the city, towards the coast.
I've made two shoveling expeditions today. It's had some effect-my driveway and walk aren't quite as covered by snow as my neighbors are. Go out now-it was staring to form ice this morning, so I think it'll be a real bear tomorrow morning.
I shoveled a path to the garage and a path to the truck, but given that my street is unlikely to be plowed until Monday, that's probably a waste. I'm planning on spending the weekend sitting in front of the fireplace and watching football.
But if you're motivated, there's about a foot on the ground, and it's all very light and fluffy and easy to shovel.
Shoveling near the doors and walkways you use most often will help, as will clearing some from the car. If you expect things to melt and refreeze, be sure to put down sand or kitty litter in cleared areas for traction!
I remember getting something like 18" there in McLean in early 1993... I have photos of James as a toddler, standing next to drifts higher than his head.
I'd recommend making a dent in whatever walkways you're responsible for, especially if they're likely to see traffic -- nothing's quite so sucky as shoveling tramped-down snow that has semi-melted and then refrozen. Digging out the car will depend on when you need to drive anywhere, and what the plows are likely to do... if there *are* any plows, that is.
