Well, that was an adventure. C. and I took off around 4:15 to go to the bookstore. About halfway there, the sky opens up and it's raining so hard I can barely see. Pull over to the side of the road at one point, but when it doesn't seem to be letting up I decided I might as well keep going as we're almost there. Get to the shopping center, sit in the car for 25 minutes as the rain refuses to let up. [The Post says "In Vienna, 2.62 inches of rain fell between 4:30 and 5:00 pm." I have no problem believing that, as that's about the amount of time we sat in the parking lot.] Eventually we decide "screw it, it's not letting up" and dash in. Brrr. Nothing like cranked up air conditioning when you're soaking wet. Didn't have one of the books I need for the class that starts on Monday, I might have to resort to B&N or Amazon.
Still pouring when we left, but not quite as bad as when we went in. A creek that I didn't even realize was there had overrun its banks and there were 4 or 5 inches of standing water on the road in one spot. Watched a bunch of wimps in their SUVs make a u-turn in traffic to avoid having to drive though water that my little Protege had no problem with. Good thing you've got that mighty off-road vehicle there, partner. Maybe they just didn't want to risk getting their OBX stickers wet and having them peel off. Pfft. Hit another majorly flooded area in Fairfax. C: "Aren't there any drains here?" Me: "Yeah, see where all that water is bubbling up? That's the drain." Watched the guys who own the soccer store trying desperately to bail water and build up barricades as the water came up to and in their front door. Lots of lights out at incredibly inconvenient intersections, and lots of people who don't seem to realize that flashing red traffic lights mean that you should actually stop.
It actually was a pretty nifty storm, and would've been even more so if I hadn't been caught out in it.
