I do not care how cool the fireworks are, you do not stop and park in the travel lane of a two-lane road. At night. In the rain. Especially without putting your hazards on, or at least giving some sort of sign that your ass is going to be blocking traffic until the fireworks are done. Jerks.

That said, the Fairfax fireworks display itself was surprisingly impressive. Next year perhaps we should try and go over there a good bit earlier, not least because the 9:20 start time advertised in the paper was apparently really 9:10. I know that, as my dad used to argue, setting off fireworks is essentially taking cash and setting it on fire, but I still love 'em.

Last time I was driving to my cousin's (he lives in one of the towers across the street from the pentagon, perfect place to watch the mall fireworks) I was running late, and still on 395 when it started. Pretty terrifying. Entire 8-lane freeway came to a stop. I'm amazed nobody died.

Ah, it was you I was thinking of then; I was mentioning to Chris that someone last year said 395 was a parking lot when the fireworks started, but couldn't remember who it was.

The Other Boyfriend lives in a high-rise about a quarter mile from the Birchmere with a balcony facing downtown; fabulous place to watch fireworks, since you can see the Mall fireworks plus about 15 other displays.
