Looking for the Windows XP disc that came with my old, non-functioning Compaq laptop involved going through a whole honkin' lot of stuff in boxes and bags in the home office/upstairs clutter dumping ground. Heh. Some of what turned up:

  • A tshirt from Yuri's Night 2007 at Moffett that I didn't remember I owned
  • A really cute cherry-print dress, still with tags on, that I probably bought on clearance at Hot Topic, um, I'll say "four-ish years ago" because it's currently two sizes too small
  • A baseball cap I've been looking for since I started packing for last summer's beach trip
  • Folders full of personal stuff from my stint at SAIC
  • Four or five web development reference books that I forgot I owned, in various states of obsolescence
  • The graveyard of obsolete tech - A Palm Pilot Personal, a Visor, a Creative Nomad MP3 player that's close to a decade old (the docking station has a parellel port!) - sitting next to a big stack of equally obsolete but even less useful tech books (WP 5.1? Cold Fusion V3? The Llama book - the pink version?)
  • An expired (as of mid-March) $25 Amazon Rewards gift certificate (!)
  • $50 in unexpired Amazon Rewards gift certificates (!!)
  • A USB 2.0 Cardbus PCMCIA adapter
  • A Firewire card (which promptly went into the new machine)
  • The letter from the state unclaimed property division telling me what they've got on record as belonging to me, which I can claim now that I've replaced my social security card (I'd been wondering where that ended up.)
  • Probably 15 lbs of various papers to sort and throw out or shred as appropriate
  • A stuffed Stitch dressed as a pirate
  • A Sun/Java travel mug that also dates back to my stint at SAIC.
  • Solaris 8 for SPARC
  • Some quilting fabric that should've been downstairs with the fabric and yarn stashes.

Dear god, I need to take a weekend and just shovel that room out.

Oh yeah, and I still didn't find the XP disc I was looking for. :-P

I just recently did a similar shoveling. Among the detritus was my father's old Iomega Jaz drive. Oy.

I tossed my zip drive ages ago. I shake my head to think that my Dad used to marvel at how much those things held.

I have those - drive and disks - too!

I wonder if there are XP drivers for it. Hm.

Wow, I guess I could hook this thing up and see? And so can you.

Then we can trade really grainy .jpgs and midis and stuff.

My parents have an internal one on their current XP box (I moved it to that box when they replaced the old machine). I took all our old Zip disks there to see what was on them.

We had a SCSI drive, because parallel was too slow ;-)

Yeahhh, parallel was a leettle slowwww.

I remember trying to back up my machine with mine. It always crapped out on the same disk for some reason, but I couldn't find anything wrong with that particular disk, and I'm not sure I always did them in the same order anyway.

I probably have pirated copies of Photoshop 3 or something on mine.

I have both Zip and Jaz drives in my office... for the contingency where I really, really need to pull something off of my late-90s backups.

Could it be worn open, over a corset-liner-type thingie, or am I thinking front zip when you mean back zip?

Ah, Boobs o'Doom. They're completely inconvenient, but occasionally loads of fun. *avoids obvious analogy*

First, I'd really love a photo of the pirate Stitch. (Northern California Pirate Festival is coming up in June.)

Second, California state law says that gift certificates can't expire. I don't know if this means someone in CA could use your gift certificate.

Hopefully the Yuri's Night shirt still fits, it was part of last year's birthday present. :)

I remember the pirate-Stitch... wasn't it in your office, once upon a time?

I can't tell you the scary and forgotten stuff I've come across while sorting and decluttering. It's scary! I'm almost afraid to get into some of the stuff that's still in the basement, most of it brought over by one set of parents or the other.

Does the cherry dress have a front seam that could be opened to make room for The Rack 'O Doom??
