Top of the list:
Donations to any of the following, or to your favorite local organization doing similar work:
- Best Friends
- Doctors Without Borders
- America's Second Harvest
- National Wildlife Federation
- World Wildlife Fund
- Heifer International
The impossible:
- My motivation back
- To love my job again
- My cat's diabetes to go back into remission
- To get organized and clear out a lot of the paper and other clutter here
The highly improbable:
- Photos of myself that don't make me cringe. It's not in the "impossible" list mostly because it has happened at least once, but that involved not being aware that a camera was pointed at me.
- Tickets to some of the Oysterband shows which are apparently happening in Canada this spring
The rest:
- Recommendations for local hairdressers who can deal with curly, frizzy hair in some way other than "give it a cut that requires trimming every six weeks, plus blow-drying and straightening", since I am not willing to do any of that on a regular basis.
- Company on an outlet mall shopping road trip to Rehoboth; maybe drive up on a Saturday, split a hotel room for the night, come back Sunday.
- Company on a road trip to the Green Valley Book Fair
- Company on a drive-through of the Bull Run Festival of Lights
- Mix CDs
- Postcards. I *heart* postcards, from anywhere.
- A replacement for my copy of the "Discontinuity Guide" (Doctor Who) that went walkabout years ago, now that it's available again for <$100.
- Something inexpensive from etsy or other handmade stuff that yells "Cathy needs me!". If it's sparkly or involves sock monkeys, so much the better.

possibly more info on curly hair than you ever wanted
Date: 2007-11-29 04:10 am (UTC)one very, very easy thing you can do to help tame your hair is to get a bottle of almond or apricot kernel oil. both kinds are moisturizing but fairly light, and have almost no odor. if you want it to smell nice, get a bottle of your favorite essential oil(s) and add a small amount. when you wash your hair, towel dry afterwards and then rub a small amount on your hands and work it through your hair. you don't want a lot, obviously, as that'll make your hair greasy, but enough that you can work out any tangles while it's wet, and it'll weigh your hair down a little and keep it moisturized between washings. it seriously takes all of a couple minutes, tops, and helps keep my hair non-frizzy for at least a couple days. (given how long as my hair is, i usually only wash it once or twice a week b/c otherwise the ends get HORRIBLY dry.)
also, and YMMV of course, there are a few products out there that are marketed to curly/frizzy hair that really do work. lush has a couple i really like (curly wurly is good and smells really nice, f'r example), and there's a company called jessicurl that has some really good stuff. i find their shampoos to be a little too heavy, they leave my hair feeling greasy, and the daily conditioner isn't heavy enough, but i use the weekly deep conditioning treatment as a regular conditioner and it's FANTASTIC. also, you have the option of buying unscented stuff, which again means you can scent it exactly how you want it, if you're so inclined -- essential oils, or a few drops of your favorite perfume.
in fact, i have a couple unscented samples of jessicurl products that i don't use if you want to try them. one of the shampoos (partly used, sorry), a couple styling products. i could also probably swing a sample of the deep conditioner if you're interested, although that one i've scented.
one other thing i've found really helpful in the way of haircuts is to get one very long layer. i loathe high-upkeep haircuts, i want something that i don't have to futz with, and the one layer helps fill out my hair without making it HUGE, and it gives it a little shape. (mind you, at the moment i've been cutting my own hair, so no layer for me!)
HTH -- if the make-your-own scent thing sounds interesting, i'd be happy to bring along some of my essential oils for a sniff-fest next time i come over. we could mix you something yummy.
anyway, hopefully this didn't come across as a lecture. it just took me years to find some of this stuff, so i am Very Excited to share the info with any other curlyheads i can find. solidarity, or some such. >:D
Re: possibly more info on curly hair than you ever wanted
Date: 2007-12-10 05:21 am (UTC)I generally have my hair cut into long layers to give it some shape, but at this point I'm tempted to go over to the salon near my house that claims to have someone who specializes in curly hair and telling her "do whatever you want with it: trim it, cut a foot off, I don't care". I love the long, curly hair thing right up until I have to spend 10 minutes and half a bottle of conditioner in the shower to comb the knots out. Ugh!
