Browsing Petfinder and ogling doggies that I unfortunately can't adopt, I ran across an organization called "Furry Suits Rescue". I gotta say, the immediate mental images were...interesting.
pisses me off when people adopt a dog (or cat) only to return them to the shelter a year later, etc.

Adopting Kai was one of the best things, but also most life-complicating things I've ever done (i.e. once you have a dog, even a small one, renting an apartment becomes a whole 'nuther sport).
From their website, it seems like he developed a dental condition and that's why he got returned. Of course they say that really you just need to commit to brushing his teeth on a regular basis to keep it from recurring, so I'm not sure why that's terribly onerous (unless he's one of those animals like The Cats that doesn't like his mouth messed with).
