My 25-minute commute took me 70 this morning. Thirty-seven minutes to get from 234 business to the bypass (for those of you who don't know I-66 West, that's three miles). Time for some happy-making links to keep from having my head asplode:

Stream The Decemberists' show from the 9:30 at NPR. There's also a whole slew of other shows available at NPR's live concert series.

Companion animals are required to be included in disaster planning at the state and local levels.
The final bill that the President signed contains provisions to help with disaster planning, including:

* requiring that local and state emergency preparedness authorities include plans for pets and service animals in their disaster plans to qualify for grants from FEMA;
* granting FEMA the authority to assist states and local communities in developing disaster plans to accommodate people with pets and service animals;
* authorizing federal funds to help create pet-friendly emergency shelter facilities; and
* allowing FEMA to provide assistance for individuals with pets and service animals, and the animals themselves, following a major disaster.

A manatee swam 700 miles up the Mississippi to hang out in Memphis. It seems to have disappeared, hopefully it's headed back south to warmer water.

Male contraceptive drug in the works. Tests in rats seem promising, but not ready for human use yet.

Rasmussen shows Jim Webb with slight lead over George Allen in the VA Senate race, 48% to 46% (well within the margin of error). When currently undecided voters agree to pick a candidate, Webb leads 51% to 46%.

I feel your commute pain. I'd forgotten how much the Cheverly commute blows chunks. It's about 40-45 mins average (best record was 32 minutes from parking lot to gate), but it took almost TWO HOURS to get home last night.

That was the ridiculous part of it - the weather was beautiful, and there were no accident backups that I could tell. The traffic was just insane. It took me 40 minutes to get six and a half miles up the road to the Beltway, because traffic was so backed up that it took several cycles to get through most of the lights. And then the Beltway and 270 were backed up as well. Nuts, I tell you.

My only sanity-saver was that I was knitting at the lights (so I had something to do besides twiddle my thumbs and snarl) and I had loud Hungarian rap on the iPod hooked up to my car's stereo system.
