Okay. Getting much less impressed by my current webhost (KIAhost), and that's why this one is a public post instead of locked like the others. When they got around to restoring my files post-server-hacking -- two weeks after their projected date, mind you, because apparently my site got missed in the restore and it took my asking them for a status after hearing no updates for two weeks to figure this out -- they only restored the main website files. Nothing in my top-level home directory or any directory other than the one holding the website files got restored, and the user directory I'd set up for a friend to host some files was missing as well. Annoying, but I figured there was a chance they only backed up the mainwebsite directory on these accounts. I sent a note asking if those missing files and directories were included in the backups and asked if they could be restored into my tmp directory if they were available. "Sure", they said; "we can have that done for you in the next two business days. Sorry 'bout that." That was Tuesday before last, the 12th. I sent a note this past Monday asking if I could find out what's going on with the restoration. Haven't heard anything back, can't find the files in question in any of my directories.
Now, things slip my mind all the time. I am pretty forgiving of that sort of thing, because Ms. Pot here has absolutely no room to point out the lovely hue Mr. Kettle's wearing. (Okay, the two weeks to restore my site originally does irk me because in that case I'm paying for a whole lot of nothing.) If the original restoration request got buried under other stuff, that's not something I'm going to raise a fuss about; it wasn't *critical*, but I would like it done eventually. When I send you a polite note asking about the status of it though, after you gave me all unprompted a date that it would be done, then it would be nice to know what's up. If the answer is "we can't find the files in our backup, they weren't included", then just tell me. I'm not going to bitch about it all that much since I could've and should've kept current backups myself. And frankly, at this point I just want to be told if they're not going to be restored so that I can stop wasting time waiting on them to get put back before I pick up and move to another host.
I notice their own site content isn't back up yet either, and support mail still routes through gmail a month after whatever incident took everything down. Not exactly confidence-inspiring. I used to feel comfortable recommending them as having good features and support for a low price, but I haven't felt really able to do that in a while.
