Naturally, the day that I leave dinner simmering away in the crockpot (a barley/lentil stew, for the curious) while I go to work is the day that I get home to find Virginia Power trucks in the parking lot and our neighborhood completely without power. Apparently it was out long enough that the stew is lukewarm and still needs some undetermined amount of cooking time, the ice cream in the freezer is a little melty, and my cat has a complex. He's scared of the dark, y'see. No, really. If he's alone in the house and it's dark, he's completely neurotic by the time you get home and turn on a light.

*tries to remember if we have any mechanical clocks or other such devices that might indicate when the power went out based on when they stopped.*

Oh yeah, the oven clock... if only it had been set properly to begin with. Doh. But if anything in the freezer was melty, I'd say it must've been off a while.

Yeah, oven clock has never worked. I think it had been a while, as the stew which started cooking at 8:45 this morning was lukewarm. Obviously, things are working again and I suspect you can get into the parking lot now.

Sooo sorry to hear about the power outage.. there is nothing better than coming home to a happy cat and a crock pot full o' something yummy.. :( Hope it gets better soon!

Well, obviously the power's back on. ;) Cat's calmed down, and stew is happily bubbling away again. Not a disaster, luckily, just an annoyance.

Now see if you where smart when you leave you would put the cat on a giant lockable (need to keep him in some how)exercise wheel.

Power goes out, cat freaks (a.k.a neurotic), spins wheel at high rate of speed, wheel powers items attached.

(side bonus: Cat stays thin, and does not feel need at 3am to release stored up from days 12 hour nap)
