Mmmm, haircut. It feels so much lighter.

(Stop with the wailing and gnashing of teeth; I just got a couple of inches taken off the ends and layers put in to get rid of the "Alice"-like triangular hair thing I sort of had going on. I've skipped the traditional Great Shearing for this year.)

Soon, I shall have long, flowing blue locks. Once I get motivated enough to actually get out the dye. I'm reminded though that perhaps I may want to chat with my doctor at my next appointment to see if she's got any idea why I might be shedding huge clumps of hair; my stylist today commented on the unusually large amount of shedding too.

It wasn't quite that bad. =) When my hair gets long, the ends stay poofy-ish but the top gets flattened out by the weight of the rest of my hair.

At the risk of beating a drum too hard: Hair loss can be a hypothyroid thing.

Beat away. =) I did actually think of that, which is why I was going to mention it to my doctor next time I saw her (this has gone beyond just simple breakage when I comb my hair, it's large clumps washing out in the shower now). I got my thyroid levels tested in January and they came back supposedly in the normal range, but I wasn't smart enough to actually write down what those numbers were and what the "normal" range was.

One possibility that I find very plausible is that the shedding is due to increased hair growth caused by NAC. If the hair is growing faster, it will shed more too. With the aid of a ruler and my roots I just estimated my annual hair growth at ~9" per year, which is not freaky but definitely on the high side. Every time I go in, my hairstylist comments on how long my roots are relative to how long I've been away. My nails also grow unusually fast, to the point that people often ask me about it, and just today I realized my recent henna lasted maybe 8 days, without ever scrubbing or exfoliating that part of my arm. Cathy doesn't take as much NAC as I do, but she does get more than enough that it should noticably speed up keratin synthesis.

Another point is that there aren't any obvious bald spots, nor any thinning, on her scalp. I'll get a closer look when I take the hair sample, but at a casual glance it doesn't look to me like there's a single thing wrong.

*nod* I don't think I really have most of the other symptoms (other than the weight gain around the waist, and I blame that on genetics more than anything else), so I hadn't really considered that. Of course, Chris' theory about faster hair growth and associated faster shedding thanks to n-acetyl cysteine sounds reasonably plausible now that he mentions it.

It looks substantially the same as it did last time you saw it, except it's about two inches shorter in in the back and it's in layers rather than all one length. I'll take pictures eventually, when it's not all frizzy.
