Today is Setting Orange, day 1 in the season of Bureaucracy, 3271.

Words you really don't want to see as you're in your cow orker's office to do one last thing before leaving for the night:

Primary hard disk drive 0 failure.

Not that I think there's really ever a good time to see that pop up on screen, but on the way out the door is particularly irksome.

The disk did decide that it was really there at some point, so I got it booted back up and left her a note to make sure she saves copies of anything she definitely wants to keep that isn't in the backup schedule. And then I fled. =)

Eugh. I was about to conclude one of the drives on our server here at home had gone south right about the same time. Fortunately, reseating it in the external enclosure fixed it. I hope this doesn't mean you're still at work dealing with this?

No, it eventually decided it existed after all and booted up. The drive was making horrible noises before it disappeared though, so I think we've got a drive replacement project coming up soon.

We just got a hot-swappable RAID5 array with 1TB capacity for under $1K... that starts to become practical for home use.
