Today is Setting Orange, day 66 in the season of Bureaucracy, 3269.

Since one can never have too many books (unless you're moving), I made C. go down to Harrisonburg with me yesterday for the Green Valley Book Fair. Whee! We got moving later than I expected since we also had to swing by The Apothecary, and ended up getting there about 5:30. It's probably good that we only had an hour and a half, since I got a good workout dragging around my full shopping basket for that hour; if we'd been there for two or three I'd be in a lot of pain right now. =)

My haul:

• the audio version of "Coraline" on CD, performed by Neil Gaiman ($6.50! ;) ),
  
• Neil's "Two Plays for Voices" on CD
  
• an English translation of "El general en su laberinto" by Gabriel García Márquez,
  
• a book on St. John's Wort which will probably be worth the $0.99 I paid for it (but not much more),
  
• a book on writing Dreamweaver MX extensions (I was somewhat surprised to see some *current* technical books there, as I wasn't expecting that),
  
• the hardcover of William Gibson's "All Tomorrow's Parties"
  
• "Fargo Rock City: A Heavy Metal Odyssey in Rural Nörth Daköta"
  
• "The Wizards of Langley"
  
• "Cute, Quaint, Hungry and Romantic: The Aesthetics of Consumerism"
  
• and "Eccentric America: The Bradt Guide to All That's Weird and Wacky in the USA". I was thrilled to *finally* discover what that bizarre castle-looking place on Rte. 15 is, since it's listed in this book. (It's a castle. Really. Bull Run Castle, "complete with an armory, two portcullis barricades, tunnels and arrow slits".) This book is great; it lists things like the Roadkill Cookoff in WV, the Museum of Dirt in Boston, and the O Henry Pun-Off World Championship held in Austin (anotheranon, perhaps D. is up for a road trip ;) ).


$61. Go me. Since I still haven't started on two other books I already had here, I think I'm going to be set for a good, long time as far as reading material goes. There were, naturally, a slew of other books that I'd like to own (like the $4 copy of Valerie Steele's "Fetish", but I figured I'd look at reviews of that one first), but it is between paydays for me and last week was the rent and bill-paying paycheck.

I think maybe next summer we should organize a road trip for either the July or August dates and maybe stay overnight in Harrisonburg or New Market, depending on how many people want to go. If we stay in Harrisonburg, we have to go to this restaurant we saw while looking for dinner; I so wish I had my camera with me, because the sign needs to be seen to be believed:

Damn! Missing all the good book fairs in that part of the country. We were told about one on the Mall in DC when we were there that was last weekend, after we were gone.

I think maybe next summer we should organize a road trip for either the July or August dates and maybe stay overnight in Harrisonburg or New Market, depending on how many people want to go.

That was the National Book Festival, which I'd wanted to swing by (Jane Yolen was signing, among others), but I totally spaced on it until mid-afternoon. D'oh! I think y'all just missed Green Valley too, as I believe last weekend was the opening weekend for this go-round. They've got a schedule on the web site, to make for easy planning. ;)

I'd definitely be interested in potential future roadtrips - I'd refrained from going to that for fear I'd wind up $100s out of pocket, but if you can haul that for only $60...

And I will definitely tell D. about the Pun-Off ;)

I think we should definitely float a group trip sometime. I was surprised to get out for under $100, but seeing as how the most expensive thing I got was the Dreamweaver book for $12, I can almost see how I managed it. =) Most of what I saw was in the $4-$6 range, and you can't really beat that. (I thought of you when I saw a bunch of books on ASP.NET. ;) )
