geekchickThere goes the vacation, I think.
The bill from the emergency vet was $380 for roughly 30 hours. We got the quote from the clinic near our house that we transferred him to this morning, and the low end of that is $380 (he's on oxygen at the moment, which is beaucoup bucks). We are not going to see that number unless he makes a miraculous recovery this afternoon. The high end (which is worst case scenario, granted, but is not entirely unforeseeable) is $770. I suspect we'll be looking at mid-500s by the time it's all said and done. Gah. Unfortunately rent and student loan payments had to come out of this paycheck too, so I don't have as much extra padding as I might like. $26 guinea pig, $1000 vet bill. *sigh* Not like I could do anything else though.
As far as his status goes, the vet this morning was pretty concerned and gave him a guarded prognosis (50/50, he said, since guinea pigs apparently have a tendency to just give up and die). He did look a lot better than when we brought him in Saturday night though; his eyes are open and he seems much more alert. I think some of the labored breathing they saw was because he was upset about being in the car for 45 minutes and then handled by a new set of strangers, his breathing had definitely slowed down by the time we left. He'll be there for at least two days, and if they've gotten his situation improved enough we can then bring him home and start feeding him the Oxbow critical care diet stuff and some painkillers ourselves.
Have I mentioned that getting up at 7 AM and commuting to Leesburg by 8 just blows?

Date: 2003-09-08 08:52 am (UTC)It's not that I think there's anything more I could do, it's that I'm spending as much as my share of the rent on vet bills. If there's a chance he could pull through though, I couldn't just have him put down because I can't really afford that $800 right now; I have to try to come up with it somehow. Luckily I have a little bit of padding on my credit card, and I can eat ramen for the rest of the month if need be.
I bet that morning drive on US 15 to Leesburg must have scraped...
Didn't take 15 out there, since I didn't know the way to the office from there. 28 North to 7 West; once you get past Waxpool on 28 where all the AOL and MCI traffic turns off, it clears out pretty fast. Took 15 to the Greenway back, which was much faster than taking 7 since it was 8:15 and all the traffic was headed into DC that way.
