geekchick: (cooking)
Tonight's experiment:

I had a couple pieces of frozen Chilean sea bass (yes, I know, and I'm unlikely to buy it again) that needed using. I also had a can of tomatoes with jalapeƱos. Wrap fish in foil with some of the tomatoes and peppers and cook at 350 for half an hour, give or take a few. Use the rest of the can along with two cups of chicken stock and some chili powder to cook up some brown rice.

I'd rate this one somewhere around a "C". The fish really could've used a little longer in the oven, or even better, a different cooking method. The rice was a little heavy on the tomato, a little light on the peppers, and was kind of bland. Next time, more spice. Ah well. I'll chalk it up as a learning experience, but for something cobbled together off the top of my head, it wasn't bad. Certainly it was edible.

I also have a pot of tomato sauce on the stove, another "let's throw all this stuff into a pot and see what comes out" experiment. Roasted tomatoes, fresh basil, oregano, thyme, mushrooms, minced onions, a healthy dose of minced garlic, a little black pepper, and enough crushed red pepper to choke a large mammal. In fact, I might've gone a little overboard on the red pepper, but I'm okay with that. Mmm, spicy. Still needs something though. Capers?

And now, since I have to be up at the crack of dawn tomorrow to take my car in for some work, I have about half an hour before I need to try to go crawl into bed and read for a bit. I sense valerian and a drink in my very near future if I want to try to be asleep nearly two and a half hours earlier than I normally am.
