An Open Letter to Paul Bremer ( from McSweeney's "Open Letters to People or Entities Who Are Unlikely to Respond")

I feel your pain. I, too, have tried to topple dictators, usurp power, and occupy foreign nations while trying to steel domestic support for military intervention. It is not easy, to be sure. Herewith I present a synthesis of lessons I learned as a fierce global power (in Civilization 3, Game of the Year Edition, by MacSoft/Atari). Perhaps you will discover something helpful for the U.S. occupation of Iraq. [...]

Accomplished today:
- Cleaning: I can now see flat surfaces on my desk, and parts of the office floor. I've also cleared out five bags of random papers that need to be filed, shredded or tossed out. Still need to clean the kitchen and tidy up the living room since we were given about 24 hours of notice that the fire marshal is coming to do inspections tomorrow; nothing like being woken up at 9 AM by someone testing your smoke detectors. (Doesn't that last bit sound like it should be some sort of euphemism?) Oh, how I can't wait to be out of this place.
- Dealing with subscriptions: cancelled the WeightWatchers.com membership as I don't seem to be able to remember to go back to the site on a regular basis; renewed subscriptions to "National Geographic" and "Cooking Light"; will cancel Emusic membership as soon as I manage to successfully download the last Warren Zevon album (without the download manager crashing repeatedly)
- Reading: finished all of The Sandman: King of Dreams" and a cheesy romance novel with vampires that I dug out of my Box o' Cheezy Romance Novels I'm Too Embarrassed to Shelve (everyone needs a guilty pleasure, one of mine is reading romance novels every now and again); while cleaning off the desk, I found a letter from a friend from a while ago, with a copy of an article he wrote for Atomic Magazine and a photo montage of "Sock Monkey's World Travels", Sock Monkey's best friend, and Dita (mmm, Dita).
- Indulging in an online quiz: If I belonged to a House of the Night Court, it woud be: )

Not too bad for having woken up at 2:30 after going to bed around 6 AM (blame the Director's Cut of "Aliens 3" -- yep, still bad). Now I should head out to get cough medicine and hot and sour soup for C.; the poor guy seems to have gotten what I had, but seems to be several times worse off than I ever was.
