bratling mentioned it in the relatively recent past and I found it while digging books out of boxes and rearranging our bookshelves, I've started reading Survival of the Prettiest: The Science of Beauty. I'm not really far enough into it yet to give any sort of coherent review, so for now I'll settle for repeating Cindy Crawford's review from the back of the dust jacket: "Although I did not enjoy being called a 'genetic freak', I did find Nancy Etcoff's book thought-provoking and a good read--yes, we can read too. Her writings explore the existence of aesthetic beauty, without placing judgements upon it. Rather, she looks at our reaction to it." It makes a nice contrast to Naomi Wolf's The Beauty Myth, as Etcoff is (at least it seems to me so far) more concerned with how we react to what we consider "beauty" and why we react in that way, rather than grinding an ax about the diet and cosmetics industries. I'll maybe write more about it when I'm finished with the book, but so far it's pretty interesting.
