Chris got me Tigger footie pajamas for Xmas. Yay! Unfortunately, they don't fit. Boo!

Had a nice dinner with E. and R. and E.'s dad tonight, followed by watching Moulin Rouge finally. Y'know, in the context of the movie, I can actually stand that version of "Lady Marmalade". Mmm, gorgeous costumes. The plan is to have a viewing party where everyone has to write down the artist and title of every song they recognize in the movie, and whoever identifies the most gets a bottle of wine or something.

I finally managed to finish A Distant Mirror. On to House of Leaves, which was one of those things discovered in a box that hadn't been unpacked in the 8 months since we moved. H. tells me it's good, but this makes me nervous: "Danielewski takes an academic's--or ex-academic's--glee in footnotes (the similarity to David Foster Wallace is almost too obvious to mention)". Yes, it really is a never-ending joke, and it's on you.. At least with Tuchman's book, I could skip the footnotes.

Ha! First time I've seen anyone slip up and put that in an actual job description.

So...LotR.

Long. Very long. Three hours. It doesn't seem that bad though, Harry Potter seemed longer. Maybe that's because I'd read the Harry Potter book and knew what was coming next, while I haven't really read more than the smallest bit of "The Lord of the Rings" because Tolkien's writing bores me near to tears. There go a few geek points. Maybe I'll try to slog through it again...I mean, I even managed to finish and like "Cryptonomicon" the second time I picked it up and that story wasn't nearly as potentially interesting. Lots and lots of people there, not sold out, but a theater nearly full of people who obviously took the afternoon off work to go indulge their inner fantasy geek. Beautiful movie. Agent Smith as an elf, weird. Ian McKellen is Perfect, naturally. Viggo Mortensen, that's all I need to say about that. Even the Nazgul's horse was creepy. It's probably just me, but the guy who played Bilbo reminded me of nothing more than a diminuitive Dr. Who (physically, not otherwise).
If you're wondering if the movie will hold up to someone who has never read the book, then the answer is yes, although if you've been under a rock for your entire life and don't generally know the plot and that there are two more to go, it probably won't be as enjoyable.

I still get amused by the required boilerplate at the end of these movies, about how all characters in the movie are fictional and any resemblance to any person living or dead is unintentional. There are those out there though who might need reminding that it's FICTION.
