Sleep: why can't I haz it? I went to bed between 12:30 and 1 or so, slept until about 5, and have been awake ever since. I'm finally starting to feel like I might be able to go back to sleep, except my alarm is set to go off in 45 minutes. :-P Add to this the fact that it's cold, dark, and rainy and will be all day, and I think I can fairly accurately predict that today's gonna suck pretty hard. Please don't ask me to do anything today that involves anything more than the most basic mental exercises.

Occupy DC has terrified my office building's management company today, apparently, given we are on LOCK-DOWN.

O.o?

I used to have periodic incidents when I had difficulty sleeping through the night, but then it suddenly became much worse - chronic. I would get to sleep fine, but then wake up at about 3am or 3:30am every day. I would lay down and be wide awake, with my mind racing although not really able to concentrate. I would get up and try to do something, but then get very sleepy.

I realized that the problem got much worse when a Subway restaurant opened very close to where I was working, and my co-workers and I would go there about twice a week. I started paying attention to what I ordered there and how well I slept. There seemed to be a correlation. I noticed that one thing I always had on my sandwich, no matter what sandwich I got, was parmesan cheese, so I decided to stop having that. My sleep improved relatively quickly. After some more experiments, I learned that eating parmesan cheese would pretty much guarantee that I would wake up in the middle of the night for the next 3 days.

Later, I found that romano cheese would have a similar effect for 1 day, as would nutmeg for 1 day.

Summary: don't rule out food as a possible cause.
