If I get cracking on these right away, I can probably get them to you before [your preferred winter holiday]. If you'd like a card, please leave me your mailing address below.

A "Dear Santa" letter from the National Zoo.

The National Zoo has posted a holiday wish list for enrichment items for the animals, from small things like Kong toys for the wolves and cheetahs and chew toys for the parrots to larger items like a slide and teeter totter for the otters or plastic kiddie pools for the small cats. You can either buy an item and bring it to the zoo by February 1, or you can make a donation so that zoo staff can purchase items. The wish list is here. (That slide is awesome, I'd love to watch the otters play on it. Heck, if I was half my height and a third my weight, I'd want to play on it. Unfortunately, that donation is a bit outside my budget right now.)

Bwah!

There won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time,
The greatest gift they'll get this year is geekchick.

I'm also rather fond of this one:

He knows if you've been bad or geekchick,
So be geekchick for goodness' sake.

Perhaps tonight I'll finally get around to putting up the full-size Christmas tree. (I have the Charlie Brown tree set up in the office.) Christmas kind of snuck up on me this year; I haven't felt like doing any shopping (which is a pretty big sign of depression for someone like me who takes the phrase "retail therapy" quite literally), which is kind of okay since the gift exchange thing this year is going to be exceedingly small by necessity, and I haven't yet sent out cards. =/ Maybe tonight. Y'all don't mind getting cards post-Christmas, do you? My plan to boost festivity levels by putting up lights on our front porch was thwarted by virtue of that outlet apparently being one of the several in the house that is currently dead and in need of an electrician to diagnose the problem. =( Maybe I'll go drive around and look at other people's Christmas lights; we used to do that every year when I was little, and it still makes me happy. Maybe even shell out for the Bull Run Festival of Lights ('ware the cheesy autostarting music) at some point, although I can see a lot of it from 66 on my commute home.

Boobies!

Adopt a booby or two. (Totally SFW, I promise.)

Or a ferret, or a lemur, or a tree frog, bison, pygmy elephant, or octopus.

Ooooooh.

The Needless Markup Christmas book is offering the chance to buy the House of Fath Couture Archives. $3.5 million will get you a "museum-quality collection [including] 26 volumes of original sketchbooks from 1948 through 1956, with more than 3,400 couture designs. The collection also includes three exquisite Fath haute couture dresses, each with its accompanying sketch." I'm drooling over that black dress with white cuffs.

Today is Sweetmorn, day 44 in the season of The Aftermath, 3271.

A bunch of you probably already know that I like giving people little random gifts, so it stands to reason that I really enjoy the seasonal wish-list thing that's gone around the last couple of years. If you haven't seen it yet, it goes a little something like this:

I've bookmarked the ones I've seen (in my memories; some of them are locked, some aren't) and sent a couple of gifts already (although LJ's email screwiness lately may have sent the notification emails into a black hole), but if you've posted one and you think there's a chance I might not have seen it, send me a link.

I keep thinking that maybe I'll play along too, but I've got this weird mental block going on. I feel uncomfortable posting a wish list myself, although I absolutely have no problem with anyone else posting theirs and in fact rather appreciate it. Intellectually I realize that if I like seeing people's wish lists and sending them reasonable gifts if I can, then there's a great likelihood that other people might feel the same way about mine; my initial gut reaction though is "I can't ask for anything for myself, that's too pushy". It's not, really, since there's no demand that anyone get anything off said list, it's just a suggestion that if you are already inclined to do such a thing, here's something that might make it easier. "Buy me things!!!" is a totally different situation, one which I tend to disregard if I see it. (For the record, I have never seen anyone on my reading list do the "buy me stuff!" demand in anything resembling seriousness.) Eh. I'll think about it. In the meantime, I'll try to ease into it by pointing out that if you're stumped for gift ideas, donations to Best Friends Animal Society are always good things.
