As near as I can tell, it doesn't actually blow anything up, although there is some speculation that it can disable applications, which is, I suppose, a start.

Before the Navy left Moffett Field, we shared a warehouse for surplused equipment... once I was moving some old VT220s and behind them in a box was a firing control box for Polaris missiles. It looked actually quite a bit like the above, but it was black, without the skull and crossbones, and had 1960s block lettering...
