Between a sweetie being hospitalized for a couple of days in Germany (where I was originally supposed to be as well), annoyances with hardware at work, bad dreams last night, [livejournal.com profile] audiography's theme this week being "Leaving" (with this one being a fine example of what this week's offerings have been like), the horrific stories about Katrina and generally spending too much time in my own head, I'm feeling pretty down. Heck, even an attempt to read the new Bookslut issue as a distraction this morning didn't help much. Guh.

If you feel like doing me a small favor, post something happy-making in comments please? Doesn't matter what it is, just something that makes you smile.

I'm home again. Eating breakfast right now, eggs scrambled with stapice tomatoes (from the only barrel with ripe fruit) some recycled onions (did you know that a shallowly planted onion base [the root section, after one cuts away the parts one wants to eat] will grow a small cluster of small, and very tasty onions) a pepper of some sort (just a hint of heat) and a splash of balsamic vinegar.

The whole cooked in a smidgeon of garlic butter.

Coffee and toast to follow.

I just rediscovered one of the CDs that I got as part of the swap you organized and I am, again, completely thrilled at how great it is. Thank you so much for doing that!

Oh, I don't know.... now that I'm awake, I find Kevin insisting that I make his lunch sandwich from french bread sort of amusing.

That, and all the crape myrtles are in bloom here. For some reason, I guess the wet winter, they're just about to fall over with blooms.

wet winter?

Did I spend *that* much time in Spain?

*boggles*

It's raining there too now?

No, last winter was wet -- raining until very late in the season.

When I first hurt my leg in August, David made pancakes for me one morning, and I heard Kevin telling him "Alton Brown says you *have* to crack eggs on a flat surface or you'll get eggshells in the batter..." I sort of wanted to tell him that I've been cracking eggs on the side of the bowl for thirty years and rarely get eggshells in the batter, but decided I didn't want to besmirch his hero : )

Then there was the time I made macaroni and cheese and he grabbed his bowl off the counter and the container of grated Parmesan and said "Time to kick it up a notch!"

Hey, better Food Network than yet another hour of cartoons. At least this way they're learning something : )

*that* made me grin.

Can't say that I didn't miss you, in a variety of ways, but hey, at least it didn't ruin your vacation? Although the reason being your coworker's mom's elective surgery now seems... ironic ;).

Anyway, on a happier note... I found the CD that you'd burned last year, that had arrived in the mail too late to bring to Spain, and brought it this year (was happily listening last week with [personal profile] sarahh.

The other night I put some carrots in Ed's bowl, and while he was still confused (looking for them on the pigloo) put some lettuce on top of them. Eventually he figures out to check the bowl and comes over. He's not fooled by the lettuce on top and begins eagerly snouting around for whatever goodies he heard under it. Dig dig, snout snout snout, dig dig, etc. Eventually he comes up, triumphantly, with a carrot in his mouth. Er, carrot? "HEY WAITAMINIT, I been cheated!" Resigned, he throws it away and just grabs a bit of lettuce from the top. It ain't easy being a cop pig.

And if that's not enough, I'm pretty sure there's still a pound brick of instant cookie dough in the fridge...

Can only offer an obscure quote for you:

"My cat's breath smells like cat food" Ralph Wiggam

For whatever reason.. each time I read that I laff.. just let it soak in...
