Actually, Chicago is pretty safe from tornadoes because of the lake effect, but it's not safe from debiliating snowstorms/blizzards and heat that kills people in the summer. The summer of '95 saw many dead from the heat, mostly old people with no A/C. Nor will it fare well if the New Madrid fault decides to get really pissed off. We actually had a very small earthquake here about a year ago. People don't think this is an area that can get hit, but it can.
