Apr. 25th, 2005 07:26 pmDear clothing manufacturers,
I would like nothing more than to help increase your quarterly profits by purchasing a lot of spring and summer clothing. Unfortunately, you seem to have not realized that we don't all miraculously start looking good in icky pastels just because it's spring. Those of us who looked terrible in "China pink" or "Butter" or "Meadow" in August still look terrible in them in April. Really. While I can build my entire wardrobe out of the few items available in black, I'd really prefer to have a little more variety in my closet. Would letting me find summer clothes in a nice burgundy or maybe a dark green really kill you? Apparently, yes. So to you, a hearty "screw all y'all". I'll be back in October, when you get back around to putting out clothing in colors I can actually wear.
Oh so very sincerely,
Me
PS - Horrible 70s-esque patterns you offer as an alternative? Not happening. Thank you, drive through.
PPS - And don't even get me started on the (lack of) sizing standards. Grr. Argh.

On the up side: at least we'll save a metric ton of money on clothes this season...

Worst case, I crank up the air conditioning in my house and my office and wear my dark clothes all year long. ;)

Date: 2005-04-26 12:03 am (UTC)I think in their minds it isn't just the 'spring colour' thing. It's the 'dark colours are too heat absorbing in summer' thing.
Phooey on that.
This is why I buy salwar kameez in cotton. And buy new-agey clothes sets from Tienda Ho in Berkeley and Pyramind Books online. Because the clothes often work professionally and for casual social occasions, and they come in colours and patterns I like to wear.
If a button-down oxford isn't strictly mentioned in the dress code, I am not wearing it. If artsy is okay, I am. Can you get away with not wearing conventional tailored clothes at your job? Or at least wear the non-conventional shirt with the conventional navy dress pants or skirt? It might make your life easier.

Date: 2005-04-26 12:37 am (UTC)Oh yeah, I can wear whatever I want so long as it's not shorts (and even then, sometimes we can get away with it). The problem is more that I can't find any summer-weight clothing around here for any purposes at all in colors that don't make me look either ill or like somebody's tablecloth from 1974.
I think you're right about the "too heat-absorbing" thing, although it's not so much an issue for those of us who spend most of our days in an air-conditioned, dark office. Fooey.
