Nov. 10th, 2004 11:35 pmMopey tonight, and generally in a bizarre mood. Damn, but I need a winter home someplace sunny. Just six more weeks until the days start getting longer again. (Okay, it'll be almost four months before it's noticeable, but I gotta take what I can get.) Until then I have hot chocolate chip cookies and fuzzy blankets and random conversations and the perspective to know it's not really as bad as it seems right at the moment. Now if I could just get my CD burner working so I could make those mix CDs.

Speaking of CDs: don't know if you got the email I sent Monday saying that my CD burner was acting up, argh argh argh. Last night I convinced it to act down (?!) and to actually work, and so today I did indeed send off 6 CDs to you. Mea culpa on the lateness.

Date: 2004-11-11 12:01 am (UTC)The burner software I am still using (to the dismay of my geek friends) is EZ-cd creator, and I have used several versions starting with 1 or 2, with many burners. Recently version 5 failed to recognize some of my latest burners and I was stuck for what to do, as it treated DVD burners say as common readers, not even burners.
Then I discovered that Roxio offers upgrade downloads for free, which are basically driver patches which expand the functionality to support all the latest drives. How nice of them.
I'm hoping that helps. If you meant "recognize" in the system properties sense, well that could be any number of things and I'll leave you to figure that out.

Date: 2004-11-12 01:05 am (UTC)We're still not sure entirely what got so entirely broken, but after several hours of repairing Windows and swapping out drives for new ones and waving rubber chicken sacrifices and scratching our heads at just how broken the whole thing was, the end result was "reinstall Win2K from scratch". That seems to have worked, as the drive is now working happily.

Date: 2004-11-12 03:24 pm (UTC)As for reinstalling windows 2000 I would advise you to install ANY version of Goback new or old, manufactured/sold under such names as Adaptec, Gateway, Roxio or Symantec. If you are like most people an unfamiliar with it, it is worth reading about. The only thing you need to know is that you can use the pre win2k compatible versions only if your formatted the drive in other than NTFS. Otherwise you must use a newer version.
This utility totally saved my ass after a TOO NEW for NAV virus hit my PC a couple years back. But even if you just buy it now and don't install it, as long as you install it before installing anything else, say cdburner software, you can then undo the damage as if you had never installed the new software. You can then uninstall Goback and not have to deal with another reinstall of windows.

Date: 2004-11-11 05:22 am (UTC)Didn't get the reply - but mail all over the place seems to be shaky these days (I nearly missed a chance at a second interview for a summer position because I didn't get the interviewer's initial invitation to my Vanderbilt address - meep!).
Sorry to hear about your technological difficulties - I can sympathize, obviously! Let me know if there's anything I can do to help, since my burner now appears to be working.
And thank you, by the way, for your post on being a Democrat in the South/a Southern Democrat. If I never see that fucking Jesusland map again it'll be too soon. I'm a transplant to the South - moved here when I was six, away when I was 17, and only came back for school - but I still think of it as home in some ways, and I get heartily sick of the frequency and casualness with which it's simply written off as an area.

Date: 2004-11-12 01:07 am (UTC)I can't stand coming home in the dark even when I cut out early. Luckily I don't leave early enough in the morning to have to leave in the dark too, otherwise I'd be utterly non-functional.
