Hitting shuffle on iTunes just pulled up "Hold Me Now" by The Thompson Twins, and suddenly it's 1984 again in my head. I'm hanging out with Christy and Mike and Danny and Rachel at Christy's house, with late night dips in the backyard pool and conversations while lounging around in her parents' camper parked in the driveway. Setting off big packages of bottle rockets in July, because we lived in one of those enlightened (no pun intended) states where you can buy fireworks that do more than "emit showers of sparks". We're all so very grown up at the ripe old ages of 13, 15 and 16, as I'm sure any of us would've been happy to tell you. I've got the second crush of my life, on Danny -- the beginning of my longstanding thing for redheads. I wonder what ever happened to him? We fell out of touch a good bit before I left Mississippi for DC. He found my address somewhere and I got a letter from him in 1991 with a military postmark, in which I found that he'd enlisted in the Army and had been sent over as part of Gulf War I. I think he said he was tinkering with tanks, which didn't surprise me much. We exchanged a couple of letters and then he fell off the face of the earth again. Heck, I've gotten in touch with my former fiance and a dear friend who'd fallen of the face of the earth thanks to having this journal, so maybe I'll run into someone who knows Danny Poole too.
