The landlord situations have been resolved. The owner of the new place relented on asking for both March and April's rent before move-in in March, so we dropped off March's rent and a signed lease. Now we just have to set up a time to meet the owner and get the keys. The current landlords apparently didn't say exactly what they meant in the phone message. What they said in voice mail: "About that pro-rated rent for March? We can't give it to you because you didn't give us a vacancy notice." What they apparently meant: "About that pro-rated rent for March? We can't give it to you until you give us something in writing saying you're leaving, but once you drop off a note in the office we can give you that number." That's, uh, not quite the same thing. I must say that C. has been absolutely stellar with dealing with the realtor and the sales office here and I'm very grateful. I would've gone in and handed them their heads while C. was the voice of moderation, in an unusual turnabout.

Speaking of moving, if anyone wants to build up moving karma and earn free food/beer and my eternal gratitude, I think I want to try to get a truck on Saturday the 20th and move the furniture (I'd be tickled to get the Budget truck that has the "It is perfectly acceptable to swear at heavy pieces of furniture" graphic on the side); hopefully some number of boxes will already be moved since I'm going to take a few days off starting the 17th to deal with things. Moving on Saturday will allow for a Sunday to recuperate and some extra time to do the final cleaning of the current place.

Glad that it's sucessfully resolved -- and that C was so helpful!

I'm available to help, if you'd like.

That was just a placeholder until I knew your plans... easily changed. Although I'd need a cheaper hotel, ideally... would anyone else need crash space?

Glad things got resolved. If I was closer, I'd be there. :-)

Ah, moving sofas. I have so much sympathy, you can't imagine. Allow me to relate an anecdote we affectionately call "The Couch Fiasco" from the day before Toni and I got married, back in July 1992...

We were living in a small (900 sq. ft.) second floor apartment with the balcony at the front entrance. The stairway up was a wrought-iron spiral, on the inside of a courtyard. I wasn't working full-time and didn't have much of a credit rating yet. My friend M borrowed his brother's beat up truck and we went to Sam's Club while Toni was at work to pick up a couch that Toni and I liked. We were on a different side of town so we started at that Sam's instead. They didn't have it, so M and I ended up circling Indy on I-465 (54 mile circuit) hitting all the Sam's in town, ending up back at the one where we'd originally seen it. Toni had given me her MasterCard. M and I get to the checkout and I discover that they only take Discover. I called Toni and warned her that M and I were coming to her office to get her Discover. She came with us to get the couch. We get it loaded on the back of the truck and are driving the 5 miles back to the apartment when the heavens opened up with rain, totally soaking the cardboard box enclosing the sofa. We struggle to get the couch off the truck, out of the wet packing, under the entryway, and, with the help of a neighbor, up the small spiral stair and into the apartment. The day before the wedding. :-)

Pat sees her enabling me to stay, as her contribution to the cause ;-). If you can offer crash space on Friday and Saturday nights, great -- the floor is OK. I can bring a sleeping bag if that would be useful. Otherwise I suppose it's either the Hyatt, or looking for a Motel 6 in Manassas off of 66.
