The local newscast just had a bit with a DJ talking about the whole Michael Jackson thing; she (the DJ) was talking about how you could see his influence on a lot of other artists, citing specifically Justin Timberlake and R. Kelly. *cough* I'm not sure we want to talk about all the ways one could possibly consider Michael Jackson an influence on R. Kelly, now do we?

The whole R. Kelly ting disturbed me much more than Michael Jackson is.

R. Kelly went to Kenwood Academy in Chicago before dropping out. One of my friends taught there, and the school adminsitrators made a big deal out of how R. Kelly went there (obviously, well before his legal troubles). They actually asked him to come to speak to the kids there. He wrote back a scathing letter telling them they were fools to ask a drop-out who got to lucky to be a role model to high school students, and he went on to suggest that Mandy Patinkin (who also went to Kenwood) would be a better choice, as he was also famous and had graduated.

I'd never really heard of R. Kelly before my friend told me about that, but I figured anyone who could tweak CPS bureacrats like that was okay by me.

And then, of course, he went and proved that they really, really didn't want to have him as a role model for kids.

Michael Jackson's long since become a self-parody, IMO... I've never heard of R. Kelly.
