I discovered this morning while paying my bill online that one of my credit card companies just upped my limit by $500. Lucky that they did, as almost all of that just went to the emergency vet's office instead of towards the vacation fund as I'd planned. Nibbler's got a very serious (i.e. life-threatening) digestive system condition and is staying there for treatment until at least Monday morning, when he'll probably get transferred to a vet clinic closer to home. And yes, I did just get back at 3:30 AM. Insert favorite expletive of choice here. I'm taking my raging headache and going to bed now, I think.

He's in very bad shape, there's no guarantee he's going to make it through this. =/ Problem with guinea pigs is that they're prey animals and are very, very good at hiding illness or other weakness until they just can't anymore. By the time you notice your pig is sick, it's generally a pretty advanced case.

If it derails the vacation plan, we'll just find something else to do. If we're really, really lucky, he'll start bouncing back soon and we won't have to have him hospitalized for a week or more at Pender (which is not cheap) and can treat him at home.

Oh, dear. That's very sudden... you were feeling bad before, and now a sudden shock. Aieee! (shakes head)

I hope that bounces back soon... he's young, and should have a better chance of recovery than an elderly animal. GI stasis... I suppose that would explain him swelling up rapidly (grim look). Sigh.

No, I think the size thing is more that he's growing quickly; he's still a baby, he's not even three months old. There was a little bloat, but he didn't really swell up rapidly to the point it was obvious. What got us worried was that he looked really, really tired and didn't want to move much; we thought it was because he was worn out fighting the respiratory infection, but it was probably more that he was in pain from the gas buildup. There've been no phone messages today though, and in this case no news is definitely good news. I may try to call and check on him tonight when the exotics vet is back in the office.
