nesting

I've been overwhelmed by an urge to redecorate my bedroom at the very least, if not the entire house. I want to paint the walls not-white (although I can't) and to drape my bed in silk sheets and velvet bedding and pillows. I want to take down the white miniblinds and replace them with curtains. I'm so tired of renting; tired of the beige carpet and the particleboard and white linoleum and appliances and the white walls in every single room. I want marble and real wood in the kitchen and wood floors with big, thick area rugs and warm, inviting colors and a real fireplace. While I'm at it, I want a huge bathroom with a soaking tub and a shower and a vanity table. And room for more pets. I want someplace that really feels like home. No matter how long I live in this townhouse, it will never feel that way to me. I'm comfortable here because I get set in my ways pretty easily, but there's very little of "me" in this place; for all intents and purposes it looks just like every other townhouse and apartment in this development. I have promised myself that I will own a house before I am 35, so I'd better get moving. [No, Greg, that was not intended. ;-P]

No problem. That's what I'm here for.

Cathy, put down the bat . . . .

I made the same promise to myself, but had to wait until I was 39. I like my mahogany panelling and huge plate glass windows, but the ancient linoleum scrapes.

It helps to have either a nice nest egg for renovation, or else a proclivity for home improvement...

I, on the other hand, never expected to be a homeowner at all, and ended up in my dream house before age thirty. So it can happen!

Almost 70% of American households may own a home, but that doesn't automatically mean that nesting is right for everyone. You end up with a commitment which forces you to live at a particular spot even if you change jobs or interests. You sound single based on the journal entries that I've read, so a house probably includes more space that you would use tomorrow. When circumstances change and you want more space, well ... circumstances changed -- perhaps there are other things that changed beyond the amount of space you need which will effect the house you want.

Disclaimer: You can just the strength of my nesting instinct by the fact that I usually feel at home by the 2nd night I've stayed in a hotel :)
