Today is Setting Orange, day 3 in the season of The Aftermath, 3271.

The Son Volt show last night was excellent, even though I ended up wedged towards the back of the room behind probably every single person in a ten-mile radius 5'10" and over. Ah well, I could hear perfectly well, except for when a small pack of obnoxious jerks decided to stand right next to me and talk amongst themselves so loudly that I almost couldn't hear the band. :-P I didn't get "Strands" unless they played it before I got there (and I don't think I was that late), but I did get my favorites: "Windfall" and "Driving the View" (and of course "Tear-Stained Eye" and "Drown"). I haven't listened to "Okemah and the Melody of Riot" enough yet to really recognize a lot stuff off that album, although I did recognize a few that were definitely played. I'm more than half-tempted to go see them again in Baltimore at Sonar on Tuesday.

Movies and dinner (usually) I'm perfectly content to go enjoy on my own, but I think I've decided that concerts of this variety are better enjoyed with friends. I didn't mind going by myself, but I think I'd have had a better time if I had someone else there and/or had gotten there earlier -- I decided to not deal with driving into DC at night in the rain, but ended up spacing out and missing my Metro transfer point by two stops and adding another 20 minutes or so to my trip, meaning I got there a bit after Son Volt had already gone on stage. At the end of the night, I did end up running into a guy I used to work with about six years ago. We only got to chat briefly, but it was nice to see him again, I'd been wondering how he was doing.

Notes on the commute home: wow, drunken college students are obnoxious. I'm embarrassed in retrospect at how often I was one of them. At least while ignoring them I got a good chunk read in what is so far the funniest book I've ever read. It's also amazing how many people can't read "must have a SmarTrip card to pay and exit the parking lot before closing, which is 3 AM on weekends"; had to back up three times to let people in the front of the line turn around and go back in to buy a card. Once, okay. Twice is pushing it, but three times? It's not like you didn't have several minutes to read the large sign on the kiosk right in front of you telling you that you needed to have a card while you were backing up to let the people in front of you out. Show let out around 1:30, I ended up getting home a little bit after 3 AM and had just enough time to take out my contacts and dig out a heavier blanket for the bed before falling over unconscious.
