Minireview of trying to schedule showings of rental properties: Why is it so hard to get people to take our money?
We went to look at this place this afternoon. Good: 1200 more square feet than our current space, at more than $200 a month less than we're paying now; plenty of space in the kitchen if we don't put in a kitchen table and instead put in an big island for more counter space; wood floor in the kitchen and entryway; built-in bookshelves in the living room; master bath has both a shower and a jacuzzi tub; deck which overlooks a wooded area and a pond; minimum 12 month lease, but we seem likely to be able to pick an oddball term like 15 months so that we don't end up moving in the winter again; neighbors we met seemed pretty friendly. Bad: very little natural light in the house; what can't be seen in that picture is that the bit of building off to the left is the standalone garage, and we've already dubbed the front yard between the garage and the house "The Mud Flats" (but we're not responsible for front yard maintenance); if the main living areas were wallpapered, it was unobtrusive enough that I didn't notice, but every single bedroom is covered in the most godawful wallpaper I've ever seen, and each room has a different pattern (As a reference point:
gothic_peacock, the pattern in two out of the three rooms made the original wallpaper in your foyer that the previous owner installed look like the pinnacle of good taste. ;)); getting out onto 7100 going south towards 66 will be a bitch (there was an accident there as we were leaving, as a matter of fact); visitor parking even worse than our current place, but there may be street parking.
The realtor showing the place was wonderfully candid with us about the fact that no agent wants to deal with rentals when the housing sales market, which is where the money is made, is so hot right now. That would explain why three separate attempts to contact the woman to schedule a showing of this place have gone completely unanswered. I don't necessarily want to rent the first place we looked at, but if we can't get anyone else to return our calls, we might have to. (We did agree that we could easily live in the place we saw today, especially if the landlord will let us replace the wallpaper, but we'd rather see what other options we have.) Possibly there will be a day off this week to go see the townhouses in Herndon whose rental office is not open on Sundays.
