geekchick: (angst)
It seems that thudding noise I heard under my car this morning on the way to work was the sound of my front brake caliper coming loose. As in "can't drive it home without risking catastrophic damage and am lucky I made it here intact" loose, apparently. I just shelled out for AAA Plus w/100 miles of towing, so it's time to call them and wait three hours until I can get towed home. I so did not need this today; guess it answers the question of whether we were renting a car this weekend pretty conclusively.

[Edit: plus membership benefits don't kick in for a week, so...3 free miles, then 20 miles at $3/mile in cash = I'm pretty screwed. I can sit here for an hour and a half and contemplate how useless this is and be annoyed that the office closed at 4 and yet I'm stuck here until probably 7.]

[Edit again: of course now while I'm waiting I ran a couple of tests again and at this point I'm not 100% convinced that the caliper really is loose and I wasn't just hallucinating it moving. I will be PISSED at myself for wasting $60 if it turns out to be nothing, but I suppose it's better to lose the money than lose the entire car and possibly worse if I was right the first time and it really is coming loose.]

As annoying as this is, it's absolutely nothing compared to what some of my friends are going through at the moment. Much love to you and your families, and know that you're in my thoughts.

So, it appears that the brakes aren't as bad as it seemed. I suppose better to have been towed home and find out the problem isn't serious than to have driven home and found out that it was. Ah well. Time to pack for the weekend.
