My cat has been going crazy lately since I've been leaving the blinds open during the day; I put a bird feeder out on the balcony and it's been discovered. =) So far we've seen a couple of nesting pairs of house finches, a pair of mourning doves, a couple (pair?) of black birds which I haven't identified yet, and just a minute ago while the cat had his back turned to the window something that looked like a tufted titmouse showed up. I think the latter might be the extremely confused bird which consistently starts singing around 3 AM. I have never seen the cat so excited as when the doves showed up, since they were the first to actually wander around on the balcony near the door rather than perching on the feeder. If you've ever seen the Far Side cartoon with the cat pressed flat against a window staring at the trucks crashed outside (one carrying small flightless birds and another carrying small furry rodents), that's pretty much what it looked like. Poor boy, he's quite convinced he's the great black-and-white hunter and that if I'd just open the door he'd be all set for a tasty snack. I'm not sure if I have the heart to let him find out that every one of these birds is much swifter than he is (in pretty much all respects).
Plans for the weekend: do some more housecleaning, try to get out on my skates (since the sun is finally supposed to come out for the first time this week tomorrow), and go see the "Cowboy Bebop" movie probably tomorrow evening in Dupont Circle.
