Aug. 17th, 2000 03:28 pmBack from the new gym. I really like this place, it's big and bright and shiny and new, and the trainers (mostly) seem to be friendly rather than intimidating. But why is it that when you go in for a fitness evaluation knowing full well that you're out of shape, you get handed over to the biggest, buffest, cutest guy in the entire gym so he can measure your body fat percentage? =( Perhaps to shame you into being motivated? It's working. *grin* He was actually pretty friendly and didn't make me feel like too big a lump to even be in the gym; even managed to coax me into attempting the push-ups portion of the fitness evaluation. I eked out 5, which is 4.5 more than I expected to be able to do. Of course I'd have ended up with the same score if I'd not done any at all, since the next point level was 7+; next time I'll know. ;)
Getting up and actually doing something other than sitting at a computer all day is doing me a world of good mentally, even if it's way too soon to have done much good physically yet. I feel soooooo much better already just for having gotten around to doing something physical (although I suspect that it also doesn't hurt that the sun *finally* came out for more than 15 minutes lately), and I think that once I start seeing actual results my mood will go way way up again. My first goal is to get the new leather pants to fit well in time for the next Boston trip. Okay, actually the first goal is to get these @#$% muscles in my upper chest to stop hurting, and *then* get the pants to fit well. *grin*
I hope I can maintain this level of motivation when I don't have specific appointments that force me to go to the gym. Right now I'm doing a series of 5 orientation sessions where they do a fitness evaluation, a seminar on metabolism, and three sessions of introduction to the various equipment, including the big twisted masses of metal known as weight machines. =) If you complete all 5 sessions within 60 days, they reward you with an extra free hour 1-on-1 with a trainer and a free half-hour massage; how could I say no to learning how to use the weight machines and a free massage? =)
