Mar. 6th, 2002 09:22 pmToday is Setting Orange, day 65 in the season of Chaos, 3168.
Lots of random thoughts, no particular order.
Wonder why when I mention that I'm going to San Diego for work, more than one person has now asked me if I'm moving there? Must be something about my drooling about the prospect of being paid to go someplace warm and sunny, even if it is only for a few days (Saturday - Wednesday). I was trying to figure out a way to get a stopover in Denver, but that didn't happen. (Sorry, P. ;) ) Charlotte it is.
I wonder if I've been a little bit too forthright in some email exchanges I've been having lately. Inside voice and outside voice, need to remember which one I should be using at any given time.
I find tsunamis endlessly fascinating, I'm not sure why. The thought of a 55-foot wave coming in my direction is quite terrifying. The Discovery Channel empire indulges me by showing various "Raging Planet/When Nature Attacks/America's Funniest Natural Disasters" type shows on a regular basis, although the content after seeing the first two is starting to get repetitive. Maybe it's just burnout, but I think that studying tsunamis sounds much more interesting right now than what I'm doing. In my next life, I want to be a geophysicist. (How often do you hear someone say that? ;) )
!@#$, I was going to watch "The West Wing" and just realized I've missed half of it. I really want a Tivo.

Date: 2002-03-06 07:01 pm (UTC)Why wait until your next life? (grin) I'm in complete agreement with you. Except right now I'm studying impact craters instead of tsunamis. After getting a Ph.D. in robotics, I decided that geophysics sounded like more fun, so went back to school part-time for a couple of years to get another degree. Now I spend part of my time on AI and robotics, part of my time on impact craters, and sometimes projects which combine both (see userpic). Like data mining in large subsurface-imaging datasets... (smile)
Volcanology also sounds like fun...

Date: 2002-03-06 07:16 pm (UTC)Because I've never in my life taken a single physics class, so I'm kind of starting from way behind. ;) Yeah, it's a lame excuse, I know that. Probably for the same reason I haven't gone back to school for anything yet, not being sure that I'm committed enough to see it through.

*grin* Indeed! That's another thing that I'd like to be able to geek about.

Date: 2002-03-06 11:10 pm (UTC)Physics? Well, arguably geologists use minimal actual physics, it is close to biology in that way... much more hands-on empirical. Identification of specimens and mapping. Math is more of a barrier -- but if you've had calculus and trig and are OK with differential equations, then you could go into geology (and with some extra work, pick up enough physics to go into geophysics).

Date: 2002-03-07 05:47 am (UTC)Ah, see that's the real problem. I'm okay with differential equations so long as they stay far away from me. *grin* Math is, shall we say, not exactly my strong point; anything above algebra II took a huge amount of effort on my part to get through. That's a good part of the reason why I didn't take any more than an introductory geology class from the physics department in college, everything else required a couple semesters of calculus prerequisite.
So maybe in my next life I'll come back as someone with some math skills and then I'll be all set. ;)

Date: 2002-03-07 08:11 am (UTC)You never know though; sometimes universities etc. do take volunteers - maybe somewhere local would offer an opportunity.

Date: 2002-03-07 05:23 am (UTC)At any rate, I had a dream last night where I went back to high school. I blame you, gc. :) (Well, not too much. It's been a recurring thing for me, but this was the first time in months that I had it.)
