What I feel like I'm doing when I do that:

Taking care of myself is at least as important as taking care of other people. I am not a completely selfish asshat if I decide from time to time that I need to take care of myself first, no matter how much my brain or other people may tell me that I am. Draining my own reserves to take care of other people is, in fact, just likely to end up badly. I get worn down and resentful, and that's not good for anybody.

Boy, I understand your feelings. But you are absolutely right as to why you have to take care of yourself. So - please take care of yourself and know that you're doing the right thing.
