In federal Washington, after all, a modest Armani suit still can get one a best-dressed award. For that crowd, taking the measure of Rogers, a special assistant to the president, dressed in Prada and Jil Sander, would have been a bit like someone trying to make sense of an NFL team's strategy diagram based on their knowledge of Foosball.

- Robin Givhan, Desiree Rogers may have improved Washington's look. Washington may not have noticed.

Hm... is this a DC bug or a feature? High fashion means big bucks which then selects for the wealthy... an average Congressional aide or judicial clerk can hardly aspire to Prada on their $35K salaries. If anything, a more-downscale mode of dress would be more egalitarian.

I don't understand how fashion works: for example, why someone feels better dressed by wearing "this year's style" as opposed to something with equal functionality and subjective attractiveness which is "out of style."

Without knowing why fashion makes some people feel better, it's hard for me to form an opinion more general than that it seems wasteful to me, so I'm not inclined to spend my own money on it. I'll leave it to others to decide whether it's worth their money.
