geekchick: (that's cool)

O_O I wish this class had been offered when I was there and trying to fill the second of my two theology requirements. (I took "Christian Perspectives on War and Peace", which was a good class and I enjoyed it, but HOW COOL DOES THIS CLASS SOUND?)

THEO-025 The Bible and Horror
Fall only
Faculty: Linafelt, Tod
The Bible can be a scary book. From chaos monsters like Leviathan and Behemoth, to God's terrifying nighttime attack on Moses in Exodus 4, to the beast with seven heads and ten horns in the book of Revelation--the Bible often reads more like horror literature than religious literature. In this course we will explore why that might be. That is, what might religion and horror (or the monstrous) have in common, and how finally do they differ? Why does the horror genre draw so often on biblical and religious themes (as in Dracula's favorite quote from the book of Leviticus, "the life is in the blood")? And is the supernatural a necessary part of religion, or can religion exist within the bounds of reason alone? The class will engage in close readings of selected biblical texts, and move on to Gothic literature and modern films. A good deal of writing and reading will be required.

Self, main campus undergrad part-time tuition is $1,609 per credit hour. This is a three credit course. You are not going to sign up for this.

That sounds really cool.

Actually, that sounds like a class the first college I went to, Valparaiso, would have offered. I think my mom expected Valpo to be as theologically ridged as my high school was, but it wasn't even close.

That's the kind of religious education I would have loved in college, and it's similar to what Valpo has. I can't remember the name of the class I took, but it was probably similar to "Intro to Biblical Literature" because it was taught from a literary viewpoint rather than a religious one, which blew my little mind, coming from the Lutheran school system since 5th grade.

And Jesuits have always been a little weird, but they are the scholars of the Catholic Church, after all :-)

And HOW MUCH a credit hour?! Sheesh!!!!! Last time I paid by the credit hour it was just over $100, but then again it was almost 20 years ago and a state school (IUPUI). I don't remember how much Dan paid per hour at the same school 4 years ago. I wonder if you can audit it...

also, do they allow people to audit their classes? which means you wouldn't get credit for it, but you'd at least get to participate.

(not that i think you don't know what auditing is. just summing up the results. >:)

How big is the class? Is it a seminar or a lecture? Cuz if it's a lecture you could just sneak in...

You can come take my class but it never gets past the 1st amendment part of religion. People drop in and students bring friends to class often. One semester I had a student who was prepared, had excellent class participation, laughed at all my jokes, handed in well written assignments, but never showed up for a test. When asked she explained she never signed up for the class.

Of course you could get extra credit ...
