I got a piece of marketing mail at home yesterday offering me a subscription to MORE Magazine, "the magazine for women over 40 who love to act their age". That's great and all, except I'm not over 40. I'm also not 40 now, nor am I turning 40 particularly soon. Let's not even start on the "acting my age" bit. ;)

At least it wasn't something offering me an AARP membership. Yet.

I get info from AARP and all the Medicare drug plans and all that stuff. And I just turned 40 this year. :P

Somehow my name and address got crossed over with something of Mom's and that was that.

So I feel your pain.

Before you ask, no THANKS. Don't plan on "acting my age" EVER. Or at least until my body forces me to.

Hey, I didn't get one! And I don't get carded for alcohol anymore, and I have a gray hair, which I got this year and is named after one of my students!

However, my stepmother got one (she's 52) and I loved her comment about "acting her age." She said, "Must I?"

I pointed at the envelope and said, "Nita, apparently all you have to do is stand on a beach and laugh."

She reconsidered. "I guess I could do that, then."

I nearly got carded buying cough syrup the other night! (And I have lots of gray hair. ;)) Was v. weird, the cashier was staring at me while ringing up my cough medicine with antihistamine, apparently (from what he said) trying to judge my age and the likelihood that I'd be running out to make meth with my one bottle of Giant-brand knock-off Robitussin.

I was bemused, to say the least.

The Fourteen-Year Mistake was on the staff, and then the board of directors, of NORML, among other credentials. He might point out that you could actually grow at least one or two perfectly decent pot plants with your lightbox! Those things have far more drug potential, in that way, than one bottle of robo! Yet I'm sure my annoyingly conservative shrink wouldn't bat an eyelash if I asked him for a prescription for one. (I bet part of it is the assumption that we're all too depressed and demotivated to tend a simple houseplant.)

I have no idea how I'd react to getting recruited by the AARP at 25. I think I'd find it hilarious, after a good healthy dose of "WTF?"
