While taking out the trash, we found that someone had dumped two boxes of books in the "we don't want this stuff, but please help yourself to it if you do" area. On the top of the stack, next to the trade paper version of "Snow Crash", was a dee-luxe boxed set of Thomas Covenant. We snagged the boxes to pick through anyway. ;) (How does someone throw out books? )

I used to pick up free books when I lived in Iowa and would go to the recycling center.
While I adore "Snow Crash" I can understand why someone might want to get rid of the Thomas Covenant books. I have yet to ever make it passed the first one in the series.

Actually, I rather liked the first trilogy. I have -no- idea why I read the second set though.

my mother (who is not particularly religious) thinks that throwing away books (any book) is 'a sin.'

so when my grandmother passed away, she and my father donated close to 500 books to hands across the water.

I loved "Snow Crash" too, that's the reason we went back to pick up the boxes - if that's on top, maybe something else good is in there too. Unfortunately the next thing out of the box was the boxed set of the second Thomas Covenant trilogy. ;) There was a returned mass-market version of "White Gold Wielder" too; the cover was torn off, which from my bookstore days means that the cover was returned for credit and the rest of the book was going to be trashed...so it was thrown out twice. ;) And soon to be three times.

Actually I read all the Thomas Covenant books once...and that was about enough for me.

Well, "Snow Crash" was on top, so we thought there might be other good stuff in there too. There were a couple that looked potentially good. I'll probably post a list, and if anyone wants any of the titles I'll happily pass them along.

Sure. The day after Arnold declared he was running for governer on the Leno show, you made an entry wondering about how the "equal time" laws would apply. The other day I saw a news article that discussed the issue, and when I read the issue I thought of your comment.

Jeez. That's almost worse than burning them. ;^) At least someone who burns them is acknowledging that they have power!
