the continuing saga of the dress

Well, the web site said I should allow 7-10 days for shipping, so I just called to find out where my package was and when it was shipped since I need the dress for this weekend. It was delivered two days after I ordered, Sept. 6, according to their package tracking. Big thumbs-up to Museum Replicas for actually calling UPS to find out where it was; UPS claims that it was delivered on the 6th and left at my front door. Okay now, I cannot remember the last time UPS actually left anything at our door, even when specifically asked to do so; their normal m.o. is to ring the doorbell, wait just long enough to slap the "you didn't answer the door, so we left your package in the rental office" note on the door and then bolt. (I've seen them do it.) There is no place that this package could reasonably be hidden around our door, the shrubbery that is there is very sparse and the package would've easily been seen. So that leaves two options so far as I can tell: 1) UPS didn't actually deliver the package or 2) UPS did deliver it and one of my neighbors took it. Either way, I don't have my dress. I do not at all fault Museum Replicas for this, they've been nothing but helpful to me. UPS however neglected to call me back as they claimed they would, so they're starting with one strike already.

Any chance that they left it in the rental office, but the note blew off the door? It could still be sitting down there...

Nope. While I was waiting for the UPS guy to call me back, I called the rental office to see if they might have it. They went and checked all the packages they have, and it's not there. Worst case, I'll order the dress again tomorrow and they'll send it out, and then I'll either find the original dress and return it, or I'll file an insurance claim with UPS.

Does ups actually have a damn signature?

I got my stuff from the museum replica store fine, and I'm wearing
it on Sunday for Faire.

I don't think it required a signature, or else they would've taken it to the rental office.

UPS Policies

Last time I sent something UPS to a residential address (I think that there are different rules for businesses), I was told that there was an additional charge to require a signature, so it's possible that it was sent without that requirement. In spite of that, I still suspect that you were expected to sign for it. Almost everything worth more than $20 that I've ever bought by phone/internet which I've had shipped to me by UPS has been delivered requiring a signature. This seems to be standard practice by most merchants (the ones who don't care about being able to prove you got it generally use USPS Priority Mail which is a little cheaper). Assuming that a signature was required (you can confirm this with the shipper), then UPS is on the hook for replacement cost (or $100, whichever is less if you didn't pay for insurance) since they clearly don't have a signature.

I haven't run into the "signature by default" with UPS, although I definitely have with FedEx. I've had FedEx packages that had the waiver of signature requirement signed, which they still insisted on delivering to someone who would sign for it.

I was on the phone with the company today and they did confirm that the package is insured, so if it doesn't appear soon, one or the other of us will be filing a claim I'm quite sure. And it's not actually for sure that they don't have *a* signature, but they certainly don't have *my* signature.

Last time we talked you said you were going both days. Is that no longer current? When I got asked if we could switch from Sat to Sun I said fine, since I thought you were going to be there both days. :(

It turns out that most people can only go on Saturday, so I'll definitely be there that day. Whether I actually still go on Sunday or not will depend on energy levels and anyone else wanting to go back that day. Plans are not firm either way at the moment though, so I can't say whether I'll be there or not yet.

Does anyone have a sense of the plan for Saturday? When I glanced at a map, it looked like the trip would take an hour or slightly less starting from the intersection of 66 and 495. Since the fair begins at 10:30am, the earliest sensible time to get together is 9:30. Any thoughts?
