Today is Boomtime, day 14 in the season of Discord, 3168.

Thank you to everyone who sent good wishes yesterday, they are greatly appreciated. <monty python>I got better.</monty python> Some really, really loud Social Distortion, buying myself flowers, more coffee and SAMe and a nice procrastination-aiding chat or two did me a lot of good. I'm getting better about this kind of thing than I've been in the past, and I think there are people who would agree with me on that. I can be sad but not wallow in misery or indulge in psycho behavior. Now I just need to take what [livejournal.com profile] hammercock posted in one of her entries to heart: "you wouldn't have to keep saying 'ow' if you'd quit hitting yourself in the head with a stick". ;)

So today I keep myself busy with Javascript and templates and Opera not playing nice with the previously mentioned Javascript and templates and status reports and listening to the bizarre playlist that loading all my mp3 files into Winamp and hitting shuffle comes up with. ([livejournal.com profile] curiousangel, song number three was "Bohemian Polka". ;) ) Oh, and pondering how cool doing this or this would be (not that I'm remotely qualified, but still...).

Why does that not surprise me? The Improbability Field strikes again, methinks...

Now I'm trying to imagine Weird Al contributing to the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack, and it's making my head hurt. No, that didn't have anything to do with what you said, but I'm just wildly improvising here. :)

I just finished installing 100BaseT to every room of my house, along with dual voice and RF video coaxial. DSL modem, household router and firewall are in, now I just need to decide on a domain name... (grin)

Glad that today feels better :-)

Well... all you really need is the undergrad calculus coursework, maybe some additional chemistry or physics. And then you could also have a fun excuse to go live in beautiful San Diego for a couple of years...

*blush*

Although in five years, most household networking will probably be wireless... I'm thinking about adding an 802.11b hub.

It's a rite-of-passage, mostly. Lots of things not usually germane to actual practice, but included because "any well-educated scientist should know this." Chemistry and wave-theory would be useful, but electronic circuits only when you're trying to fix a non-user-serviceable component out in the field...

Calculus, well, that has cultural value ;-)

hi, i saw that you had happy rhodes as an interest in your info, and just wanted you to know that there is a new community for her on livejournal, [livejournal.com profile] happy_rhodes. it's new, so there aren't a lot of people in it yet, and the more people the better. just letting you know.

Remember, it feels so good when you stop! ;-)

Speaking of bizarre and funny songs, remind me to put some up on my server for you to listen to. I have some more that are arguably as good as "Prison Bitch." :)

Hold off, 802.1A just hit the market....in a short time it should be the standard. Better x-ref rates and more secure.

I'm running the SMC SMC7004w wireless router, with 2 SMC2532W wilerless cards in laptops (looking to try one in the desktop soon). I love it.

Hmm... if Apple goes to 802.11a, then I'd probably wait. Otherwise, 100' radius covers all of my house.

Does SMC make a Mac card? There are 3 computers in my house, and none of them are Wintel-compatibles.

SMC doesn't seem to. D-link (D stands for Doesn't), Linksys.....none of them seem to have Mac versions...

(nods) yeah, that's what I found. At work, we're actually going to use a mix of 802.11a and 11b in our Arctic field exploration work this summer... 11a has better range and throughput, but 11b has been less interference-prone (given frequency-hopping)... but trying to find or make an 802.11a repeater has been a bear lately.
